    Is this rare?

I have had this lying around the house for a while. I dont remember how I got it. It is a factory gas container that goes in the trunk inside the spare tire. Is it rare, and if it is, what is it worth?

As rare as flat brimmed MONSTER hats, TAPOUT and AFFLICTION shirts.

wtf is it? A factory gas can with a hole in it?

For me, gas container means one of three things:
                    1. Gas can.
                    2. Fuel tank.
                    2a. Fuel cell.

So yeah, I think it's neither of these so I'm at a loss for exactly what it is.

ok, here is a real answer:

yes they are fairly rare. i have watched them sell in ebay for 75.00 to 125.00 still in the factory new box. they are slightly more common in europe. as you have likely figured out, it fits inside the spare tire in the trunk and used the factory tie down. i don't know if you can use it with a 14" tire though as it was designed to be used with cars having 15" and larger wheels.

it definitely has cool points attached to it, but i personally see it as more of a safety hazard than anything else. since it lays on its side, this means the spout must be completely sealed and the cell unvented in order to keep fumes from filling the inside of your car. so, unvented fuel tank in your trunk + 110 degree day = well... you fill in the blank. i understand this is the reason bmw stopped making them. perhaps a good addition if your fuel gauge doesn't work.

Only thing is, it's not meant to be stored with fuel in it.
It's basically just a jerry can that fits into a stock position. If you run out of gas, you have that to go and get some. Instead of nothing. if you only have a smidgen of fuel remaining in it when you put it back in the trunk, you won't have any problems. The fumes won't be concentrated enough to cause anything.

                              This.

Stored gas would just go bad unless you got it out and used the gas in the can each time you filled up, then filled the can back up = too much work for what it's worth.
