saw a silver 959 last month when i was in San Fran for business. i was headed back from marin country, just before the Golden Gate bridge when a 959 passed my friend in his slow-ass trooper. i tried to make him catch up, but the poor trooper wouldn't comply. i couldn't get my camera out in enough time to snap a pic. i knew exactly what it was, but didn't know they weren't legal here until a few years ago. damn.
When the car came out, the auto mags spilled tons of ink talking about it. It was a bold move at the time by Porshea to make the car. Tons of technology from the car trickled down to the regular road cars. They would probably be worth more money today if they had more of a factory racing effort back in the day. Besides a couple of Paris-Dakar rally wins, it didn't get raced much at all. That's one thing that makes the E30 M3 so special... the extensive racing history.
I'm not really into P-cars generally, but I'll always have a soft spot for the 959. It was an outrageous car for it's time.
