They were made in the same time period you're talking about..
The euro e36m3 had more power, more power per engine displacment(which honda is supposed to be all about), weight is within a few hundred pounds, the e36m3 won best handing car in the world at the time, and price was close to the same when they were new...
I would then say the e36m3 was just as much of a supercar of its time as the nsx.

The only thing the m3 had going for it was more power (about +/-12HP), which is negated by the +/-200 extra pounds that it carried. The rest is a matter of opinion...

I fail to see how that would make it a better car. It's more of the fanboyism here that gives it the edge. ;-)

The E36 is a touring car. The M3 is hotted up version of a standard everyday business man's sedan.

The NSX was a 2 seater mid engined sports car.

The 348 ferrari, Lotus Esprit, 911 Turbo, were also sports cars.

The Diablo and the Maclaren F1 was the only super cars at the time of the NSX's launch.

Well, mid engine, 2 seats, aerodynamic body. Total regular everyday passenger car.

The fact that it matches or beats the NSX in most areas despite what you said before about it being based on a regular 3 series chassis and not purpose built from scratch like the NSX is what I see as the great accomplishment.
Did I really have to spell that out for you?

They put a bigger engine in a decent handling chassis... I fail to see how that is such an accomplishment. I'll give it that it was one hell of an engine at the time, but that's about it.

I honestly think there is more to the NSX than what's on paper. I would really love to drive one someday.

But the m3 is still as good or better in most areas despite not being mid engine and having more than 2 seats. The m3 makes more compromises but is still as good or better in the areas I mentioned.

Comparing the engines, I think the m3's is more exotic. More HP and torque(and more per liter) both from a 6 cylinder. On the topic of high HP naturally aspirated 6 cylinders, the S50B32 is impressive even compared to the 993 porsche engines at the time.

You're the one that doesn't get it.

Am I the only one who is going to comment on the performance of the LFA? Toyota, a brand with little to no prior success building supercar's with their first model achieved huge success, acclaim with the automotive industry and the nurburgring package which boats a mere 10hp over the base model one is the 4th fastest production car you can buy. That's HUGE, how many other brands took decades to do this? This car is a monumental achievement. How many people here drool over the thought of owning a Zonda or Koenigsegg? If you're gonna cry about heritage, count those two manufacturers out as well.

Oh, and this car lapped 7:14 with the nurburgring package with street tires, besting the 458 by nearly 20 seconds. Given a Lexus is beating Ferrari's (the biggest name in racing pedigree) flagship model with their first supercar, I'd say they've done something right here.

                                +1

The NSX was a mid engined honda. Get the hell over it. That doesn't earn it a supercar badge. It has to performed. Being out performed by an m3 is an embarrassment!!!!! and you know why already. It couldn't even out perform the supra nor was its engine as well built but it cost way more. FAIL! We understand that it was mid-engined and a two seater, but by that logic that would make the MR2 a supercar.
