    See through tires

Someone sent me an E-mail with this pic. My question is wont mud/debris cause an unbalanced condition? What if a rock lodged in one of the openings? Needs some kind of skin covering, no?

I could be wrong but I think they are left open for demonstration purposes.

I could definitely see them being easy to unbalance, but as DrJosh mentioned it probly is just for demonstration purposes. Check this video out:

Wrong on both counts. Those are airless tires designed for the military.

I would think centrifugal would throw pretty much any and all debris out of the wheel. And as far as a rock getting wedged into it, how? It would have to be stuff in from the side by some outside force. I mean, on a regular tire, rocks get stuck in the tread because the weight of the car compresses down on it, but that isn't the case with this.

And even then, it's still better then having your tires shot/blown out.

Who's going to notice an out of balance wheel on a hummer mobbing along on dirt terrain in Afghanistan? That's the last thing I'd be thinking about

No we weren't wrong. I realized that the were being designed for the military, we were saying that the side of the tires were (most likely) left open for demonstration purposes. I can't say that rocks would get stuck in them, but I could definitely see mud getting stuck. But who knows, I am sure they were aware of this being an issue and have figured a way around it.

And if you have ever driven with snow in your wheel, you would realize how just a little bit of weight can make your car feel like it's about to fall apart.

i doubt they'd cover them. they need to be able to flex.

You could put a layer of rubber over that and not have any issues with flex.... Hell sidewalls do it

If you read the article that Blocke posted it states that the next step is to design sidewalls. So the open sides are only for R&D purposes

It's a wheel design likely inspired by the "tweel", developed by Michelin many years ago. It is used in low-speed applications only due to the insane noise and vibrations caused at higher speeds.

Mud would be a serious issue without sidewalls. So cool though, it's almost like reinventing the wheel.
