Would you sacrifice an E34 M5 for an S38 powered E30?

Logan, don't destroy that M5. I beg of you!

But if you do, dibs on interior.

Yes, yes it is. Those are best used for boat anchors ;) Another dog was the NAPZ motors, however there was hope for those. Ditch the pistons for some flat tops, and swap an L series head on and you have a pretty potent 2.2 or 2.4L motor that looks just like an L20B except for the fact that its a little taller.

All the CA series motors kinda suck.

The CA18DET is okay. Best of the bunch really.

Can put down some decent numbers and rev way past what the SR throws rockers at. It's a decent CA.

But, they too have their issues. No need for us to go into that hulabaloo.

My CA20E's are boat anchors. Both of them, at my cabin. I know all too well.

The E34 M5 is a dynamite car to drive. Personally, I wouldn't mess with the formula.

It takes a lot of money and a lot of time to properly dial in an E30 with an S38, and I'm still not sure I've ever seen one that was really "right." Frank Fahey did an S38 swap into an M3 and brought it out to an autocross or two in San Diego, where I watched him get smashed by the 3 or 4 stockish E30 M3's there.

I'd rather have an LSx E30, but the honest truth is you'll get bored of any swap. The S38 sounds like sex and hauls ass, but the first time you get walked by a stock E60 M5 or Z06 you'll feel pretty shitty considering how much that swap costs and the low modding "roof" that comes with it.

I would hold on to the m5 till I die because cars in general cars are only going down hill every year some kind of new BS, and to have something built by hand that someone took pride in that's something you can't buy anymore. As for the swap i'd build an aluminum block s50, Pete McHenry did it and his weighed 2 pounds less than a stock s14.

Fuck that! Keep the m5!! That car is a beauty and a masterpiece. It has so much more value than a s38 e30!

if there is only minor things to fix on the M5 then please leave the motor in there and build the car.

If, God forbid, the M5 gets damaged, then think about swapping the motor into an e30 m3

Exactly. So just wrap it around a tree in a way that the engine is salvageable.

I'm not so easily convinced there's significantly more value in the m5. Yes the e30 with the s38 is going to be a money pit to do right, but e34 m5's while drooled over simply arn't commanding a huge price tag...their engine's are. Take a look at this m5, great condition being owned and maintained by someone who takes every effort to make the car incredible and it's not sold yet. People circle jerk over hand built m's (I'm in the circle too, i just don't want the cracker), but no one ponies up the cash. Put an s38 e30 up for the same price and watch how fast it sells.
