No I haven't yet, my return just went into my account last night. I'll be picking it up sometime between now and this weekend depending on the sellers availability.

Ok guys I need you help... this guy is dicking me around. He WAS willing to take $1,200 for the car so I went to pick it up tonight cash in hand and he tells me he has now changed his mind and wants $1,800! I'm like WTF! we had a deal! He says I know but I thought about it and spent more than that on the wheels alone. So I nit picked the car and tried to get him to take $1,500 and he's STILL like eh I'm not sure.. Now I DO want the car however after a closer look it's starting to look more like a parts car rather than a fixer-upper. The engine has a good knock, there is a lil more rust than previously thought, it needs an exhaust, the dash is cracked and there's other little things that bug me about it. I don't mind paying $1,500 and sinking $1,000 into it BUT I do not want to pay more. Am I being an ass or should I pay the $1,800 he's now asking for? On a side note I also found a MINT 87' 325is I can prob snag for $900 BUT it's an auto and im a 5 spd kinda guy. Whatchu think?

walk away. what ever you think you need to sink into it you can double. This guy obviously doesn't have people knocking down his door for the car. Give him your number, tell him if you decide to let it go for 1200 call me, bet it won't be long before you phones ringing.

Another consideration, a 5 speed swap can be had for about $500 or less complete.

Yes he DID take a deposit granted only $100 but still a deal is a deal! That's why I'm like WTF? He says he'll give it back if I decide not to buy it but still WTF! I've been pumped to buy this car and NOW he changes shit mid stream! Grrrr...

Honestly I would not even buy that car for $1k. I would have lowballed the shit out of him considering its condition and the fact that its been sitting for who knows how long.

Take you bill back and walk away.
Buy the $900 e30 and spend the $100 you used for a down payment to call a flatbed and haul that thing away from his driveway when he's not home.
                      Problem solved. :D

at first I was going to chime in with the wait him out but the reality is that you haven't been here on r3v very long and this site isn't the place to get advise in terms of market values...most of the members here would offer him $600 and a few would straight up ask him to pay *them* to take it off his hands :D

1200 was your agreed price but that's when he didn't know the value of his car. he didn't even have it on the market. you asked, you wanted it, you still want it. you can get that iS but it's not the one that's been calling to you and you already know you don't want an auto.

1800 is more than you expected but 1500 is right in the middle for both of you. the important thing is for both people to feel comfortable at the end of the day. if you can live with paying 1500 and he can live with accepting 1500 then go for it. You're not getting ripped off, if that's your question. If it had a price tag of $1800 on it you'd feel better about it so keep in mind it didn't actually have a price tag on it. he may genuinely not want to sell it.

btw, it's been a while since I've read through the thread so I can't remember if you told us if it has all 4 alpinas. If it does, not only did he pay more for the wheels alone but you won't be able to get those for $1200 now. well maybe around that price, but you'll have to look around and pay for shipping and take your chances on the condition. the euro bumpers are worth...well it doesn't matter. If it's a parts car instead of a fixer upper like you said, you'd easily make twice the $1800 dollars back with just some unbolting.

a deal's only a deal once you press cash in his palm and walk away with the title

Those wheels are NOT Hartge's. They are Hartge-ish or Hartge-esque but definitely not real.
The center emblem area is recessed as opposed to raised on real Hartge's.
Also real Hartge's in 4-lug have the centercap screw exactly in the 3 o'clock position relative to the stem being centered at 6 o'clock. These have the cap screw at 11 o'clock.

I say don't raise your offer. Either he takes it or you walk.

Well the update is I got my $100 back. The guy would not budge on the price and for what it was it just isn't worth the $1,800 to me. SOO I went and bought the 87' IS I was also debating. I ended up getting it for $850 so not too bad. I'll post up a few pics on Saturday when I pick it up.

Perhaps the best thing you can do is what you did. If the guy took your deposit, he should have honored the original price. That is ethics 101. Did he write out a receipt for you stating the total price, amount paid and amount owed with his signature? If he did you could have threatened a lawsuit.

If not, let this be a lesson to you and all who read this to obtain such a receipt when in this situation in the future.
