For the past two months, I've been debating what I should do to give me a little more hp and torque on my e30. I came from a background of 4 mk3 vws, and sold my last one because it simply was no fun to drive!!
I baught my 88 325is, with bav chip and some fun goodies back in september and have loved my e30 ever since. Back when I owned vws, I would constantly want another totally different car.
I am slowly working on the exterior, as I daily the car. I am currently an automotive student, I have wrenching experience but nothing to the extent of swaps or FI.
Im just wondering what you guys would recommend for me, because I am dead stuck on these options. Since its my first time around, I feel that I am underestimating, or "doing it cheaply" and I do not want to have to do this twice.
M30/50 vs Boosted m20.
HP: Have ridden in a 350whp evo, reguardless the awd sticks like glue and 350 in an e30 would be a different case, but would like something along those terms.. I am assuming the 300whp range.
-Reliability (needs to take a punch and still daily driving)
-Ease of parts/to work on (i havent had experience with timing chains)
-Fuel economy would be best around the 20mpg range on average
Ive read a lot of m30 vs m50 threads, and the torque of a m30 seems my thing but I am afraid the mileage would be garbage. My m20 isnt the best at times, but the m30 has another liter of displacement. They also seem hard to find, and trans options are limited.
As for boosting, I would keep a generic h1c/ holset setup on a b25 with a slight rebuild (bearings, seals, hg, headstuds) but not like a stroker/full rebuild.
To play with, i have about 2K to start off. I do not have a spare daily (so I couldnt have the car under the knife for longer then a week or so), and should be working pretty often during the summer.
