You're pretty spot on, but you forgot to mention that the electrical systems in them are FAR worse than any VW, or BMW ....

I mentioned Lucas electronics, it's a name synonymous with electrical problems. The Merkurs harnesses will crumble in your hands literally. The pair that I had were decent examples, an 87 and an 85. The 85 was in far better condition than the 87 but I used it as my parts car if that's any indicator of how bad the 86 and 85 models were. Very little Sierra stuff translates over to the Merkur. Want a cossie grille? How about $400-$500. Want a 2.0 cossie engine? Well put in for some overtime at work because after all is said and done you could have bought an e30 with an S52. There are some guys who use Volvo heads, mitsu cam years and some light machining to make a 2.3 16v of sorts but the lengths these people go to for a bastard engine is insane. Just my additional 2 cents.
