They have a cool 80s euro flavor, and aren't like anything else you're going to see on the road. A very individual and unique car. I have always wanted one. Drivetrain parts should be easy.

Why? When you look at that mekur what do you see? Its old and ugly and your e30 blows it away in all categories.
Is it that aero hatchback?
Just the other day I was wishing my convertible was a cheap silver euro hatch with cloth seats and no junkyard parts that handled slower but had that neat euro hatch.
And if bmw hassles entertain you just wait til you mess with fords.
I laughed at this video.

I actually bought one new in 1989. all black, 2.3 liter turbo...very fast, heated leather seats, decent factory stereo..crank sunroof. BUT....Ford didn't support the vehicle then...and i doubt they do now. Blew the turbo while under warranty and it took the dealer...6weeks to get a new turbo charger from Europe. Someone broke into the car...breaking the passenger glass...took dealer another 6 weeks to get a bronze tinted glass. I wouldn't mess with another one, period!

Eh, the cars were built in Germany. Maybe that's where the association came from. The car itself will be hard to find parts for they were kinda rare and most got trashed but the engine has tons of stuff around also the stuff is pretty cheap. and can be very potent little engine! if its in good shape i say go for it!

I had a soldier with one of those things back in '96. That thing would hall ass on the autobahn-- there was a pizza hut here in Germany about 60km away- we would go there for our lunch hour and run that car at 250kmh no problem at least twice a month- until it got a rod knock. he bought a new longblock from ford, never got it running and gave it to me when he had to leave here-- I had no place for it at the time and gave it to a junkyard (with the BRAND NEW motor)
was a cool car, and cosworth sierra fords were very popular over here in the 80s

A lot of misinformation in this thread. It's a ford Sierra, a crappy Americanized version with a non intercooled SVO engine and different ECU. They came with open differentials, rear drum brakes, horrid interiors, predominantly Lucas body electronics, and massive turbo lag. The only redeeming factor is the old iron block which can handle some serious boost. I would have to be paid to take one of those unless it was it pristine and STOCK and not an 85 or 86. Unlike almost everyone else I have actually owned two of these. I learned my lesson. YE BE WARNED.

You're pretty spot on, but you forgot to mention that the electrical systems in them are FAR worse than any VW, or BMW electrical system.
But they can be some serious fun.
I saw one pop a turbo seal at a parking lot and I pushed it home 2 blocks away with my turbo probe. He was amazed that his car when it ran normally couldn't accelerate as fast as my car could push his.

I've driven a stock Sierra XR4i (non-Cosworth) in Europe. They handle very nicely and are super easy to drift. They're also quite light by modern standards: around 2850 lbs fully loaded with an iron-block inline six under the hood.

I don't know exactly what Levent has planned for his Eggenberger replica, but I'm sure it'll be fun to toss around the track.sigpic
