E30 MEMORIAL:
People say that the powder on the diff covers is a big deal because of heat dissipation...but I do not believe it is that significant. Would I run a fully coated cover on something that was a race application? NO
Have I conducted significant testing, scientific theory, you tube videos or Tweets supporting my opinion? NO
:D All I have is 15yrs as a Master Tech for multiple manufacturers prior to my coating business and the use of those experiences and common sense to give an opinion...LMAO
Sorry...It's late. couple pics and I'm gone...
CAtuned(Igor)..Thank you again for posting pics while I am gone....

A way to determine if the heat of the diff cover would be a factor in the powdered finish would be to run one on a differential and drive it hard. Then immediately use an IR thermometer pointed at various spots on the diff cover. Record the temperatures. If all of the areas of heat are less than 400 degrees Farenheight then you should be good. Parts are baked at 400 degrees and so we know that the powder can withstand that level of heat.
Repeated heating and cooling is what will "possibly" degrade the finish.
Additionally, the diff covers are directly in line for potential damage from rocks and road debris that will hit them at speed. This should make the consideration of the coating not standing up a secondary concern to lots of rock damage.
These diff covers will obviously be used by those that want the extra bling of a flashy finned diff cover so that they can stand out at the local parking lot meet. Not something that the function over form race crowd would likely throw any funds toward.

e30vert:
Thanks for your input... and you are correct. If this truly was a concern to anyone, well then they could attach a temp sensor to the diff or cover and compare to a non coated cover. It is highly doubtful that any "In The Blood Racers" will be coating all their diff covers for "BLING" unless some new thread comes up in the forums that powder coating your diff cover can increase or decrease downforce..thus making for better lap times...LOL
You are also correct that "most" coatings are cured at around 400*F, but the actual temp that can be reached on most "properly cured" powders is around 600-650*F. There is also high temp powders that can withstand up to about 1200*F.
Repeated heating and cooling below these temps will not degrade the finish if it's done right....
The main concern would be for the internals of the diff itself and again IMO...on a daily driven non race car...no issue. Most owners would probably be more worried about smashing the diff on a man hole cover or speed bump....lol
Remember in the end... "STANCE WILL MAKE HER DANCE" BAHAHAHA...Email.
