Lots of drift videos posted show guys just holding their cars wide open and allowing the rev limiter to help control the overall rpm's of the engine. I thing that the rev limited actually does not limit using the fuel pump control and instead only fires every other stroke of the engine rather than every stroke.

From Wikipedia , "Limiters prevent damage to an engine by interrupting the power that is distributed to the spark plugs, this prevents the engine from operating above a pre-determined RPM level known as the redline. The RPM level that results with the spark being arrested can be a constant level, or, with the proper ignition control modules, variable. Variable rate ignition modules can be adjusted quickly and easily to achieve the appropriate RPM limit for different situations, such as street racing, drag racing, road course racing, highway driving, and lawn turfing."

Anyhow I got carried away and let the old M42 hit the limit in first, she jumped and revved back down a little. There was a puff of smoke, don't know if it was from him or myself but I'm guessing it was me. After the lanes merged on the other side of the light I was a little worried but my baby has been driving a little smoother and feels a little stronger since that, I'm guessing I cleared something out..

Just never done this before, the limiter is to protect our engines correct?

End result the girl and I loved it, later on down the road when we passed the Porsche I gave the thumbs up and the old man had a big smile so I think he had fun.

Just wondering, if you have your foot down, letting it all out, will your car just sit revving a the limit?

Sounds like a blast. My M42 never fails to put a smile on my face in power-band range!

There are multiple way to 'limit' an engine, not just spark. Hence the term fuel cutoff.

Most stock rev limiters are fuel cut. Ignition cut means you send unburnt fuel out of the exhaust valves which is not so bueno for your emissions equipment. Some 2-steps and the like are ignition cut though.

I use my e30 mainly for Autocross and often end up bouncing of the revlimiter for 1-2 seconds at a time and have not had any issues.

Lol i used to pull this shit when I was younger, it was quite obnoxious.
My redline has been lifted a tad higher, so its just a little more high-pitched

Haha my best friend just got an eta yesterday and I dragged him in mine. Hit the rev limiter. I like to do this often.

I limit my r3vs all the time. Not keen to push the engine up to 7200rpm thanks to the after market chip.

I stand on the limiter on my M42 at the track (7100RPM) when I drift, just because I don't have enough power to sustain a higher gear, lol.
