Anyone use Rotella T diesel oil in their gasoline e30?

A major amount of guys in the atv honda trx450r forum use Rotella T diesel oil instead of running synthetic gasoline oil. Alot of the motors are extremely high strung and receive frequent disassembly; all the engine builders on there swear by it.

Considering TRX450R engines are flat tappet engines just like an E30, I think it could benefit from the nice amount of zddp, and phosphorus that hasnt been disallowed from being used in diesel oils like it has in gasoline oils by the EPA.

    Anyone use it?

Have you owned or currently own an SV650? Those guys swear by that stuff.

I've never used it, but the rumors i've heard is diesel oil is high in zinc and therefor similar to the oil that was available to our E30's in the 80's/early 90's.

      No personal experience though.

I was told by quite a few people in a recent inquiry that Shell Rotella T is the way to go, for the reason Parker said, it's good oil, and it's also dirt-cheap. A gallon is $12 at Wal-Mart.

Would running the stuff affect smog at all for ur car? All I know is that I wouldn't try it in California if it did.

ZDDP and Phosphorous are both considered low level cat contaminators. However, 1. It only applies if your consuming oil 2. Current warnings say it 'could' shorten the life of the cat rather then a certainty 3. In the 80's gasoline oil had high amounts of both before the EPA got at it and e30's back then ran just fine with cats.

Higher levels of ZDDP can be found in Valvoline VR1 raceing oil.

Or the mobile 1 Racing oils.

As a general rule the CJ-4 oils for turbo diesels will be higher in ZDDP than gasser counterparts. These include Delvac 1300 and Delvac 1 from mobile, Rotella from shell, Delo 400 from Chevron is all good stuff, and will be great in a m20.

In my e30 I ran VR1 20-50 in My Duramax I run Delvac 1 (full syn). I used to know ZDDP numbers off the top of my head, and if IRRC the VR1 is 1450ppm and the Delvac1 is pushing 1700ppm. I may be mistaken but those are the numbers I am remembering.

I run the stuff, have been, and more than likely will be for quite some time.

Just bought some for my next oil change, from what I've read it works well.

http://www.joegibbsracingoil.com/ has oil with ~2400ppm but at $17-19/quart is well out of budget for most folks.

I think the great thing about rotella T more then anything is that its $12 per gallon.

I ran Rotella T (15w40, if I remember right..) in all of my past M20's. They all ran great. Don't know how much the oil had to do with it, but I wouldn't run anything else in an old single cam. It's got a solid reputation and the price is great.

VR1 is a slightly better choice than Rotella T, because of a bit more ZDDP. There is no advantage to using synthetic oil in an M20 engine since the oil change intervals need to remain at the factory specification. That interval needs to remain the same to prevent build up of combustion blowby condensates in the oil. I.E., you can't take advantage of the longer life of synthetic oil.

An even better oil in an M20 than either of those is Brad Penn 20w50. But it is much harder to find than VR1 or Rotella T. For more than you ever wanted to know about oil (or filters) wade through what is available at http://bobistheoilguy.com
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

what about just any brand of diesel oil, like oreilly brand or napa brand?

is it only rotella or delo?

I ran 15w40 in my previous m20. never ran into a problem and actually had less consumption then when I ran royal purple 15w40.
