      In related news....

theres an auto 190e with no license plates parked on the street and its making me think about how to legally comandeer cars on the street before they get towed.

you cant just ask is this car stolen and it doesnt even have a plate to run anyway....

to be declared abandoned?...at least in NJ...has to be there (on your property) for a certain amount of time then you have to go about running an ad for weeks in the paper asking someone to step forward and claim ownership. Then you bring all this good stuff to DMV and jump through a few more hoops. Seriously though it can be done by the book.

Ya we dont have to put any ad in the paper in cali. The key part is towing it to your property without a license plate....particularly if it is stolen.

Then you apply with the dmv, and if you pay all the fees they send them a letter and they have a certain amount of time like 60 or 90 days to contest it.

but the first step is getting it the 10 miles to my place before the tow company gets it for free, not knowing if I could go to jail for it.

if its stolen not abandoned...i believe it goes straight to impound and theres nothing to apply for..even if the prev owner doesnt want it it has to be impounded. if its abandoned you can grab it but how can i tell?

I should clarify that I guess I don't really want a beater. The hobbyist mechanic in me would want to fix all the major problems. I looked at a jeep comanche last night that was riddled with problems. My wife reminds me that I don't need a second project car. I lost my company car in a layoff, so I just need dependable transportation that won't look like a jalopy when I drive it to an interview. Guess it is time to look for a honda civic.

Car needed a lot of work when purchased. Plus a long list of upgrades in 2 years. Plus is my daily driver, so lots of regular maintenance and repairs as result of daily abuse. She still has a ways to go.
