That's a good knowledge nugget right there.

If that car was in AZ I'd off him up 400$ and they'd probably take it lol. But I'm pretty good at making shit sound expensive to fix lol.

First question, does the a/c work? If not, 1k-1200k period. Thats how it works up here in northeast fl at least. You guys gotta be the same.

Second is the paint/body bad or just dusty and pollen covered?

The ticking noise is normal. Usually by a loose valve that's not closing all the way. It prob needs to be adjusted and even after that it will take a while for the noise to subside. Furthermore these engines will always have a slight valve lash noise... as long as it doesn't sound excessive your good. I wouldn't hesitate driving it 150 miles with a valve noise.

Does he have records of the timing belt? he says he did it but just to cover your ass ya know...

those rims look like e39 2 piece style 5s. but that would either mean 5 lug or adapters.

i'd take a good look at the suspension.

6 months or more of sitting, it'll need a new timing belt anyway.
That's def an 88. I wouldn't mind paying $1500 if the interior is mint and it's rust free.

He said it worked before he stopped driving it. He said he would assume so but isn't sure as of now.

Not sure if the paint is bad in regards of how well it was done and how it looks now. He got the car painted a color from one of the 5 series (not sure which color or which generation 5 series). It's been sitting for 6 months in a truck yard for semi's (he is a truck driver), so you can imagine the dust/pollen on it. Looks to be a 1/4" thick.

I'll ask about the timing belt record. If my memory serves me right, he did it himself.

Thanks again and will look for your reply.

Question, if you guys look at the pic of the rear, is the bmw emblem worn or is that some kind of other emblem he put on? It looks like the symbol just faded and the remaining metal foundation is only what's left.

for rust and corrosion? I'll most likely get it started up (bringing a new battery) and I'll take it to a local shop so I could get the undercarriage inspected on a lift.

Its the bmw emblem but the color parts can actually flake off. Its like a plastic...

If it runs and drives. No weird noises, no rust, a/c works and the paint is decent just dirty then 2k is a fair number. But as it always goes, ask lower.

As for the belt job, you cant really see it but see if he has a receipt. If not, look for a sticker in the engine bay saying when it was done. Still possible he could be lying about it but they come with the belts so he had to of bought it. Lastly most people do the accessory belts and water pump at the same time. If the accessory belts look newish then it was prob done.

                            Also, 89's have a different 3ed brakelight.

                                Updated with better pics:

So there is no belt on the compressor( i guess the a/c lines don't go with all the other accessories?) Most likely it will need a new head....that's the worst. He said the valves need adjusting. The dash has a large crack in it (typical). And it has a new non e30 color paint job. They didn't do a full paint job which includes painting the bay as well. He said he wouldn't take less than $1800.

                                yay/nay?

                                Thanks!
