    Help me not get screwed.

Hey guys I recently found an S50 that is local to me for a steal of a price. The motor is unassembled but has everything minus the cams. He's asking 1500 which to me seems rather low for a (almost) complete s50.

I've worked on cars for quite some time, but I have never broken a motor down and to be honest don't know what I'm looking for. Is there anything specific I should be looking for to make sure this wasn't abused? I know to look for scarring in the cylinders but that's really about it.

I know search blah, blah, blah. Help me out?

Why would he be selling a disassembled engine? What did he find that made him decide not to complete the overhaul? I'd be looking for a running, complete s50 for $2250-2700.

    1500 engine
    300 cams
    600 assorted parts/seals/lost bolts

You see where I'm going with this...

He says it was broken down for a turbo build. It seems shady to me, but I wanted to see if I was being too over cautious.

I have been searching for a good m50/5 speed swap for my car and this popped up today.

I was recently in the market for a lsx motor. I found a couple steals on "complete" engines that were dissasembled.... I couldn't find the nerve to buy one.

As Farbin stated, you are asking for a possibly huge headache. Even if he has all the parts, you will need new bearings, rings, hone the cylinders, hope that the head isn't warped, if it is, cut the head. Then track down every nut and bolt...

Yea, just find a motor that already runs.

              Its a night mare.

You're gonna have to go through and mic every bearing at this point, make sure the journal is still round. Did he lay the crank properly? ETC
