    Jeep Cherokee Sport

Looking for the best place for technical info on '99-00 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 Sports.

Anyone know of the best forums or sites with documentation of recalls and quirks these Jeeps commonly have problems with?

I have a ton of friends with this exact model from these exact years, but they're all autos. Which I don't mind, but since I've never driven a stick version I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience with them. I can get used to driving anything quickly, but is the durability of a manual vs. auto trans even relavent if the Jeep only has 80-120K miles?

    Thanks ahead of time.

I'm in jeepsunlimited.com . The trans that came in the 4.0L Cherokees (manula) are the AX-15 wich is a Toyota trans at the end, the smae thing goes for the AW4 auto trans, very good trans.

You may hav some problems with front discs, maybe some bushings and thigns like that, not major problems to deal with.

        :stupid:
        Albeit with better spelling.

I have a '96 sport 2wd with the AW4 auto. and have zero complaints with it. The only things I've had to deal with was replacing the waterpump and starter, both of which were cheap and easy to do.

I've got a 2000 Cherokee Classic that I've had for a year now. Good car, very solid. The only problem I've had to fix is a yoke that caused vibration at high speed.

As far as transmissions go, I'm having an issue with taking off and stopping. A lot of the time it will kind of make a thud feel. Like it's shifting into/out of gear too late. Any ideas cherokee experts?

how many miles? the symptom you describe tell me somehow , maybe is the the whole trans, I mean, when it's wear and the discs start to slip and such things. In that case a overhauling rebuild is your best friend.

Other things could be just a dirty valve train, dirty oil/filter or somethign wrong with your trans module.

But when is a "pig" to start in the stop lights again, it's commonly a tired trans.

Just rolled 100k miles. I've had the symptom for about 15k miles, and hasn't gotten any worse. It's like it just started one day. The best way I can describe the feel of it is if you had a bowling ball rolling around in car. When you stop, about 1/2 second later, there's a slight thud feel.

I have a 1995 Cherokee Sport w/ 4.0L High Output motor, auto trans. I bought her with 135k and she runs damn near perfect. I had to change a busted radiator hose and the thing needs new bushings up front, but other than that, its a damn reliable machine. The 4.0L HO is a torquey motor, and it does great offroad!

Thanks for all the info guys. Getting confirmation from fellow E30 drivers was the last assurance I needed.

That trans problem sounds common to me (as well as clunking when shifting to reverse). I drove a 93 grand cherokee v8 for a few years. 206k miles on it with the original trans. Motor is solid, only things to watch are quadratrac transfer cases, front sway bar links, cv joints and boots, and diff seals. Chrysler auto trans are not that great, some will last forever, some die quickly.

V8 never came with AW4 auto trans, just with 46RH and sucks a bit since is a harsher trans than the AW4 trans and won't last like the AW4.

Transfer cases issues? weird, I service more than 800 GC's and none had any big issue with the transfer case, except some but nothing un natural, like anythign can be broken in life.

Yes, the v8 didnt get selec-trac. Well, i guess transfer cases arent that bad. The quadratac is a viscous coupler, and i was told that these rarely get rebuilt. They just swap in a direct drive. Our case went bad, but i never liked the quadratrac. Why be in 4 wheel all the time if you dont need to be?

With the Quadratrac in ZJ's, the transfer case fails quite often (the viscous coupler unit) and with that failure the transfer case locks itself in 4WD part-time... the best option for this is to swap in a different transfer case from a Cherokee that allows for the option to select between 2WD and 4WD.
yes, i tried to convince my dad to do this, but he ended up buying a reman. Oh well, its for sale now. He bought an x5.
