Who here sails?

I use to crew once a weekend in our local sail boat races on a 32 footer. I'm thinking of getting it back into it again - but I want to learn more. Mostly I was a grinder/rail meat - and am loking to do more (eventually get into 2 man small boat racing)

Any of you guys have you ASA certificate? Is it worth it?

I was thinking of taking some classes before I go back to crewing...what do you think? You really don't get a chance to learn much when your grinding all day...

Go get in a 420. Fucking awesome. Easy one person boat too... but way more fun with two. Aka... get hanging on the side. Amazing. I took lots of lessons as a young'n and now sail with my dad on our big slow 35' wooden toy. But I would much rather hop in a 420 any day.

My dad used to have a Melges 24 that he raced up in SF...won quite a few races, and just sold his J92 that never saw much successful racing. Its pretty fun, but in no way was I good enough to be helping him out during races (even though he made me come to a few). He just co-bought a smaller boat, not sure what it is yet though.

My dad and I used to be big into Hobies... he does sailing instruction now down at the coast. I haven't done much since I was about 15.

I love sailing. When I was 15-16 I raced A sabot at Channel Islands harbour. We would also take the occasional weekend trip out to Santa cruz Island. I'm stuck inland now, but Ive been looking for a Hobie Cat or a Laser or something for the lake. Fun stuff.

I used to race single handed boats regularly. Won several regattas from ages 11-14 in an IOD (Optimist) and then moved in Lasers and did very well in the Radial class. I've crewed on a few larger boats, but it just wasn't as fun to me as the action of single handed.

A good friend of mine was the top Laser sailer <18 about 2 years ago. He just got back from the Worlds in Brasil and placed 23rd. Pretty damn impressive.

So yeah, I sail.

i crewed for a few years on a J/105 out of annapolis. raced both the 105 one-design class and PHRF A1. most of my time was spent getting bashed about on the foredeck but i saw time behind the wheel and trimming sails during the distance races. great skipper but we weren't very successful in the short races. he sold his boat and i had to find another ride

i crewed on a 38 and 41 footer this summer but the owners/skippers are assholes

next summer i think i have a First 44.7 lined up; hopefully NOT on the foredeck 100%.

i've thought about buying my own dinghy and racing it, as i like the feeling of a small nimble boat instead of yachts. and i woulndt have to put up w/ other peoples shit. i'd prefer a double-handed class but i haven't looked into what are the competitive classes are here. i really like the idea of a skiff but i hear the learning curve is STEEP on those and probably not the best boat for the potomac or bay due to lighter winds in the summers


the most important thing about yacht racing is getting in with a good crew. the boats that are always at the front of the fleet have been racing together for YEARS with hardly any change in crew. one mistake out on the bay and you won't place high.

I learned to sail on a 420 for years, went to a few junior olympic races, had a blast with the harness! Then i went to a vanguard 15 which is a fun quick boat as well. This past spring i sailed on a tall ship through the caribbean for 4 weeks which was totally amazing. Currently my brothe has a J/22 so I spent the last summer crewing for him. Sailing is awesome even if your just putting around in a small dinghy.

good times, but I am in the mountains now with few lakes :-(

When I was fifteen I saved up my pennies and bought a Force 5, which is basically a laser. I used to sail a lot and took several courses but somehow car maintianence has found it's way ahead of boat repair in my daily schedule. Maybe next summer... My girlfriend likes boats better than she likes cars so maybe I'll have her fix the boat. ;)

i have sailed since i was ~8 or so, taking a break for a few years till i was 13, when i started sailing radials on the jersey shore. sailed them till i was 17, then instructed up there at metedeconk river yacht club for 3 summers. taught optis (IOD). sailing is a blast

my dad has an experimental rig on his 28' Melges E Scow (E Sloop), which gives it a 6' carbon bowsprit and an asymmetrical chute. hauls ass downwind, but doesn't run too well....needs to point higher than symmetrical equipped scows.

wish i could sail here in richmond in the winter....it's in my blood...my whole dad's side of the fam sails
