Yea I tend to do that BUT they never have any parts on spot! Not even some basic hardware stuff.

I'm lucky... I live right down the street from http://www.importpartsspec.com/. they stock a ton of shit- and if they dont have it, they get it overnight for free. But i mainly stick to patrick at bmw for big orders... nobody can really beat him.

Hmm, my "local" dealer (Midwestern Auto Group) is usually pretty close to mail order price, has stuff in stock, and is willing to knock a bit off the cost if the mail order place is a lot cheaper. Great when I need stuff that day, so I can't argue. I'm not big on reusing rusted shit, so I tend to go over there pretty often when I take stuff apart.

Im the same way Charlie, that is how I developed such a relationship with those guys. I would still go there for hardware because they usually have it and the markup doesn hurt so bad on things like that.

Its just charging 240% for something I didnt need that day was enough to make me walk away from the counter. It was just the backlight for the computer screen. Shit I can live with checking my watch for the time for 3 days.
              Im now E30less.

my local chapter did an article on the discounts local dealers give to CCA members. the author anonymously called a handful of dealers and requested quotes on common parts. lets just say many dealers were not pleased when the article ran. the CCA discount ran between 10%-20% but the price that came off of was the big difference. A few dealers gave the discount on the dealer list price, while many others gave the CCA discount on their marked up price (the markup varied by dealer). this was a few years ago. i'd like to see the article redone to keep those dealers honest

thankfully i get 25% off list through my wholesale hookup at an area dealer. unfortunately its not the one 1mi from my house
