Either one. Both are good filters.

for m20, i really like the fram extended guard or tough guard. they are inexpensive and filter down to a very small micron level to keep the oil looking clean longer than any other filter i have used. try one, you will like it too.

The best match up would be not buying overpriced Royal Purple.

Royal Purple fails almost all tests. I just had my quaife differential rebuilt and the diff specialist said if I use RP he will not warrant the repair.

I am not a fan of Fram.

I use Wix, Amsoil, and Bosch. In a pinch if I have to I use OEM.

          First hit on Fram reviews:

General Maintenance & Repairs - Why is FRAM oil filter so bad? - I've read alot of post on here saying fram oil filters are really bad. How bad are they I have one on now but next oil change im going to delco. What problems have they caused in the past on LS1 engines. How do I tell if using it has harmed my engine. I...

          First response to teh question:

They are made with inferior components, and many many people have reported more valvetrain noise on startup with these filters. They use cardboard endcaps which can easily leak and cheap bypass valves which are known to stick open. You could get lucky and run them without a problem, but knowing that there are better choices for the same money, why take a chance? I'd go with an AC Delco or Purolator filter for the same money, both of these are solidly built filters.

If you do a google search on Fram oil filters, you'll find enough horror stories on why they suck.

Here are a few I found over the years:

Both filters are fine. It's the Royal Purple thats your problem.

If you're going to pay for "full synthetic" motor oil, check the label to make sure it actually uses a Group IV (PAO) or Group V (usually ester) base stock. The vast majority of "full synthetic" oils (including RP) use Group III (cracked petroleum) base stocks.

Can't go wrong with Red Line or Amsoil, both of which use PAO stock. Also consider Brad Penn PG-1. Though it's a Group III oil, it's been proven to work better in track-driven M20 and S14 engines than just about anything else. And it's cheap.

Not really. Since my DD is a BMW I usually only buy Mann but someone recommend Wix to me today after I told them about the great deal on RP I got for my wife's car.

I've read a lot of reviews on RP and they conflict with some content in this thread.

Also I will never buy a Fram since one blew up on my brother.

Even at $2.50 off per quart Royal Purple is still the same price as Valvoline and Mobil synthetic oils.

Unfortunately there is information on how bad Mobil 1 is also. So its all hearsay to me until I see an oil analysis from my own car.

Also if you notice I wasn't looking for people's two cents on royal purple, but rather Wix and Mann oil filters.

                        Personal experience you say?

I used RP 0-20 in my Z stroker on the second (synth) change. This is a brand new motor with at the time under 2k on it and it used 3 quarts in 150 miles! The previous changes used 0 and the next change (Castrol Edge Ti 5-20) used none in 2k.

Ad to that it was 17.99 per quart vs 27 for 5 quarts on the Castrol and I am sticking with the Castrol.

General LSX Automobile Discussion - Royal Purple ... Why do many dislike it? - Let me start out by saying that I did a search for Royal Purple on this forum for issues that would discredit Royal Purple and I can't find a single sound argument against it other than folks complaining about it's cost. Which I find...

You have been here (and online) long enough to know you will get input on things you want and don't when you ask a question in a forum.

Really who fucking cares, its a filter. I doubt you are doing a oil change on something that is going to notice the difference. You could of had that oil changed by now instead of posting this stupid thread.

Sure if you don't give a damn about your motor it is just a filter.

If you do it is all that stands between the engine and harmful contaminants that could destroy the motor.

By that logic it is just beer. Buy cheap s*it that tastes horrible. It gets you just as drunk.

Use mann-mahle-bosch-hengst filters are good. I have only used wix on imports or american cars.
