    What ever happened to freedom?

I find it reprehensible that the Government requires me to drive with a bomb 14 inches from my face.

An unrestrained or improperly restrained occupant can be seriously injured or killed by a deploying air bag. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends drivers sit with at least 10 inches between the center of their breastbone and the center of the steering wheel.

...serious or even fatal injuries can occur when someone is very close to, or in direct contact with an air bag module when the air bag deploys. Such injuries may be sustained by unconscious drivers who are slumped over the steering wheel, unrestrained or improperly restrained occupants who slide forward in the seat during pre-crash braking, and even properly restrained drivers who sit very close to the steering wheel.

Airbags have been around for 20 years now, bud. You're a little late to the game.

A car is a weapon. Use it correctly and it becomes an essential tool for transportation. Use it incorrectly and it can easily kill you. Same goes with an airbag, as well as many other tools...

One thing is for sure if im falling off a 10 story building i'dd choose to fall on a cousion over oddly shaped concrete any day of the week.

The fine line between safe and sorry is the distance you sit from the airbag in that if you are 10 inches away its a safety cousion, if you are too close it is a "deploying" safety cousion. Very big difference

Here's an easy solution, wear your damned seatbelt. Or are you just now learing about airbags?

It looks like I can remove them myself... the law prohibiting removal applies to professional mechanics:

If you your seatbelt works correctly, you don't need an airbag.

If your seatbelt doesn't work correctly, the airbag can kill you.

Look at the text on the link I posted in the first message.

I've been driving for 35 years - never been in an accident in a car with an airbag,
always wear my seatbelt, and never been injured.

If you have that airbag accidentally deploy when you are working on the car
in its trajectory, you will be in a world of hurt.

The fact that no one seems to care if the government can tell you how to use
your own property shows how little value people place on freedom.

Even if I didn't plan to remove the airbag (to install a better steering wheel)
I still don't want the government to force me to buy or to keep the airbag.

Some of the responses do indicate that not everyone has enough intelligence
to understand how airbags really work, and the history of injuries they cause.

But.. You do know Government has been mandating the guidelines for car productions for well over 2 decades now, correct..? That's why you just can't "bring" a euro model over here to the states

It's not about the airbags in your car, it's about the airbags in public office. As a longtime motorcyclist, i wear a full face helmet and leather 99.9% of the time by free choice, i dont give a shit what the government mandates and feel they should not make that decision for me or anyone else. The problem arises that the emergency room is required by law to accept anyone in peril and stabilize them.
