Ziggens beat me to it but it happened in 1996 and those idiots on the show just thought "M3" and didnt think about the year. It was a pretty much stock E30 M3 owned by a club member in Topeka and its true that the kid got away and drove home. They just replayed the footage of the part where he turns around in the median. You can see the same natural gas well and billboard.

I can only imagine the ass-whoopin he got when the cops showed up.
