I asked specifically which types of cars. I'm not a dumb ass, I know what pulling means. Go back and reread my post.

I guess my question then is which motor makes that power turbo or NA reliably and is cheap to maintain and build?

              M20 Turbo.
              M30 turbo.
              M50 turbo.
              S50 turbo.

Cost in that order. Also depends on condition of M20 and M30.

That's kind of enough to handle in an e30.

honestly it depends on what you want to spend.

get an M20 in good condition, and you are well on the way to where you want to be, but, keep in mind, most M20's and M30's you will find in junkyards (for cheap replacement and swap) are getting pretty long in the tooth mileage wise. hell, even the venerable M50 that most of us swap in is nigh on 20 years old, and getting on there in miles as well.

what I am getting at, is that you can reliably build most anything, but getting a motor out of the yard is a crapshoot. given the choice, get the newest technology you can get your hands on, and you will be ahead in the reliability arena. my personal choice is 24v, for the new tech and also for the reliability and low maintenance that the motor has, as well as the sensor and peripheral availability and condition

To make 200-250 whp you don't need to turbo an engine that was never intended for boost and all the added cost and complexity that invites. An s50/52 e30 with a few bolt ons will reliably lay down the power you are looking for. Want more power later? Great! cams or a supercharger will both give you big gains. So you can buy a sorted swapped car for around 10k and sort it to your liking or start with a rust free roller and spend time and more money to build it yourself.
