I have a vert... it might have 80,000 miles but did the odo stop at one point? Pretty common...

Go with the straight body. A quality paint job/dent/rust removal will cost more than some engine maintenance...

it's the same body! the only real difference is the valance, they all have the "late" arches.

definitely go with the one with better cosmetics. engines are engines, you can swap in a different one any time.

I agree with most everyone else. Go for a good body/paint.
All the mechanical maintenance stuff can be done in your garage, all you need is some curiosity and the internet. The paint and bodywork are much harder to do on your own, bodywork is a learned skill, nobody is going to teach you how to lay down bondo and wetsand over the internet.

            An engine is easily replaced.

mine had 180,xxx on the m42 but the paint was minty. Paint is the hardest to replace.

                Whenever I buy a car, it's
                BODY
                BODY
                UNDER BODy
                body again
                interior
                suspension
                then drivetrain

Engines can always be replaced, rust can't always be fought

the bodies are actually different between 87-90 cabrios and the 91. the 91 is the facelift style with the larger rear valance and that is more desirable than the earlier model. the wheel arches are all the same i guess.

in the case as stated by the op, i have to agree with everyone else that the higher mile car would likely be a better choice in this case. of course this based on the info provided which isn't much.
