Thanks for posting that pic of the deployed air bag. It no doubt helped to save your life. I'm helping my brother with his 3rd e30, a 90 325i air bag car. He wants to remove the air bag steering wheel and replace it with his wheel from his current 86 e30. Hopefully this will help change his mind. Good luck, I hope your ok.sigpic

Not to annoyingly push a sorta insignificant point, but how much would you say the airbag helped vs hurt? I've always heard that people don't want to get hit with an e30 airbag, but I'd like to hear something backed by experience. The first car I ever rode in was an e30

It's all a matter of driving position; the further you are from the airbag, the safer your impact will be. The closer your position is, the more detrimental/fatal the airbag will be in the case of deployment.
I'm personally against my airbag because of this; those who are taller/enjoy a more lax driving position would/should do well in keeping them if safety is a concern.

There have been a lot of studies since airbags have been mandatory to be installed in cars; mostly, they were installed because of a progressive Ralph Nader crusaide that "people don't wear their seatbelts".
All that halabaloo is moop for saying if your wearing your seatbelt you shouldn't need an airbag; as long as you maintain a rigid and alert driving position and know how to brace for collisions. Most people however, are pootering their Priuai around or leaning back ganstaaar fordaswag and are impeding on their own personal safety by not maintaining an alert/upright position, and they need a secondary passive collision protection system
It's exactly the reason my dad has back problems now. He sits at a 45 degree and ha or his whole life. He got into collision at 45mph hitting someone going 30mph opposit way into a turn and he slid under the seat belt because he sits almost laying on his back (don't ask me how he does it, I still don't know). Had it not been for the airbag, my dad wouldn't be here today. However, would he maintaining a rigid 80-90 degree angle, the seatbelt would have done its job and stopped him before even needing the airbag.
However; we are simply talking wheel airbags. Side and rear airbags are an incredibly smart progression as they are less likely to damage the vital crash areas (brain/head and spine) upon deployment
However, I'm glad your safe and sound OP. Yet another r3ver alive to tell the tale. Sucks about the car though.. She looked amazing :|

OP. F@ck dude. What a piece of shit for turning into you. I seriously think that people are becoming far too selfish with the way they drive these days. Especially the fatties in their SUV's. So sorry for your loss.

How do insurance companies value Classic clean E30's like this one? I'm thinking about going with classic car insurance and getting an appraisal so I can get what it's worth if something like this were to happen.
H&R OE Sport Springs - Bilstein HD's - Kosei K1's ET27 - Toyo R888 - ZHP 5spd knob - BavAuto strut bar - DINAN Chip - E30 M3 Offset Bushings - Colgan bra - P-car daily
