I hate ethanol gas

It rusts the metal gas tanks in my e30s.....



I fill the tank with gravel and rotate it for a few hours to knock out all the rust. Then I coat it with POR-15.

I hate it too. I had one of the rubber fuel lines break on me once. Nothing you can do about it though, I don't know anywhere near me that sells ethanol-free gas.
Someone make a plastic e30 gas tank?

I would bet the rust has more to do with your tank being 20 years old, as well as the fuel lines.
E10 doesn't other me too much.

Actually, the one benefit of ethanol gas is that it is likely to prevent tank rust. Ethanol free gas causes the water accumulated from condensation to settle out on the bottom of the tank. Naturally this leads to rust. Ethanol gas, on the other hand, will absorb water. This tends to keep the tank clean.

The big reason why the transition to E10 was such a pain in the ass was that gas stations and many cars had a ton of water in their tanks. If it wasn't vacuumed out, well, the gas would mix instead of floating on top. That is why there were so many fuel pump failures during the transition period.

There are lots of reasons why e-gas sucks, but rusting the tank isn't one of them.

We got ethanol free gas here. Hello awesome fuel economy, better power, and overall a happier car. It's usually about the same price as shit gas too.

Sorry, but i don't believe that. I have about 14 e30s sitting around, and any that have ethanol gas in them for any length of time start to rust. The ones that haven't run since ethanol became prevalent still have rust free tanks.

Hydrocarbons are non polar, water is polar. Alcohol has a hydroxy group on it which makes it polar. Like dissolves in like, you mix oil and water and they separate, you mix water and alcohol they become one. Vodka is 40% alcohol and the rest water, there are no separate layers. Therefore it will absorb water sitting on the bottom of the tank but at the same time it will always contain water itself.

I'm going to remove mine shortly to fix a dent where the jack slipped (thanks PO), and among other things, I'd like to POR it.

I welded a frame onto my cement mixer and bungy corded the tank to it. Then I threw a couple of handfuls of bolts into the tank and let them bounce around for a couple of hours. The I wash the rust out with a power washer. The bolts knock all the loose rust off, and then the por-15 covers the rest.
