I certainly can't vouch for any other store, but the autoparts store I work at rents out an amazing amount of tools nowadays. Even 'noid lights for injectors and other random tools. Anyway, I periodically warranty out torque wrenches (every six months or so) to make sure I have a fresh one on hand that's been calibrated.
I wouldn't single out an entire corporation just because of a few employees. O'Reillys has plenty of morons, so does vatozone, so does Napa/advance/pep boys and all the rest. Find a local store you like with people you trust. Decent help is few and far between because it's hard to hire knowledgeable people for the pennies they want to pay. I'd hardly say I'm an autoexpert but I feel like goddamn genius every time I go to work because of all the maroons.
So i went to autozone

just an warning always inspect those tools before using them! last time my friend and i went to autozone to borrow a compression tester to check compression on his m20 i noticed as we first started to use it that the rubber hose piece where it attached to the metal fitting that threads into the spark plug hole was stating to come detached and would spin independently of the metal fitting. i instantly pulled that fuxer right back out and told my fiend not to even bother, and tell autozone not to rent that one out anymore. i had that happen before with a cheapo compression tester that did the same thing and could not unthread it from the spark plug hole of an m42 and were unable to ever remove it because of how deep the spark plug well is on that motor. so just be careful with cheap quality, used and abused rental toolsLeave a comment:

that's how security deposits work, yup. :)They sell u the tool...then refund ur money when u bring it back. So if u don't bring it back or break it...its yours. That's how they do it in CA at least. However, if u r going to do that u mind as well get a New tool off the shelf instead of keeping the beat up rental.Leave a comment:

I don't like Autozone. They always try to add on stuff when I'm checking out and they take forever to attend someone. O'Reilly's guys are much nicer and seem to care about what they are doing. Yes, loaner tools are a bank saver.Leave a comment:

I just had to poke fun when you started a thread because you discovered something that I guess I had assumed everyone knew about, like being able to rent movies for $1 at red box in Wal-Mart for example.Leave a comment:

People actually use torque wrenches on wheels? I was gonna rent for suspension swap.Leave a comment:

you need to buy one!!!!! there is not a single wheel that I ever put on a car that does not get torqued- call me over cautious or whatever you want, but I have never had a wheel come off a car SINCE i bought one.Leave a comment:

I got an adjustable Kobalt wrench from Lowes when the water pump on the e28 shit the bed out of town. It was like $5 and fit perfectly. Keep it in the trunk just in case.
This was all because Advance/Auto Zone didn't have anything that would fit.Leave a comment:
