    Ignition Keys

So I went to the local BMW dealer to have a new key cut (I have a blank ordered from pelican parts) and I was told that I have to leave the key (the only one I have) with them and it was going to be sent to New Jersey with a 3 day turn around. Does this seem right or can I just go to a locksmith and have them cut it. Anyone else have the same issue, I really don't want to give them the "only" key to my car (and it being unusable for 3 days).

Shit I had a spare key cut at True Value hardware. The ignition key is not chipped or anything. Its just a regular old key, like your door to your house.

Take it to Home Depot, or ACE hardware..something like that. Should be like 4 bucks

If you have a new key, a good locksmith can cut your blank to that pattern. I would not try that with a well work key. A new plain master key from BMW isn't expensive.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I have the uncut master, but the one I do have has twenty years of wear on it. No chips or breaks, just well used.

Local key cutters here wont touch bmw steel keys. They say it ruins their blades or something :). Good luck, most places will do it once but then never again.

            Ive posted this before.
            Go to dealer with VIN
Provide Dealer VIN number at parts counter and ask for the KEY CODE.
Write it down. Leave and say thanks
Go to a reputable locksmith in your area. Tell him you have an older BMW that uses a non chipped key and you have the code.
            Give them the code
Watch as they cut all the bumps and ridges.
            Pay 8-12 dollars.
            Leave with smile on face.

As long as your locks are original to the car I'd just order one by VIN from the dealer. This is the reason I keep the VIN from the donor car if I need to swap locks/ignition.

So the counter guy at the dealership was full of shit when he said he had to have the original key too and send them both to Jersey.

Yes. There is a big database in the Fatherland with every key code and VIN. Usually it's like 2 days, although they'll tell you two weeks.

I cut mine at local ACE hardware store for $3.75. They have blank brass key, which is not as good as OEM, but for the price you can cut 10 keys and never worry about losing/breaking your key again.
