My "one that got away"? About 6 months before I got the current E30 I have now, I was driving down the highway with my wife, when I noticed ellipsoids in an E30 grille at a dealership. We drove in to find of the most pristine E30's I've ever seen in my life. It was a 1987 325iS, Delphin-Grey Metallic with Cardinal Red leather interior. I walked around it several times, finding not a single dent or scratch anywhere on it. On the inside, the leather looked brand new, not a wrinkle in it, I shit you not. I had to get inside of it. The salesman unlocked it for me, and I climbed in. It was immacualte, and it only had 111k on it. The previous and ONLY owner was a doctor who only drove it on weekends, to play golf and go to lunches, meetings, etc. In the glovebox was the manual, still in it's plastic sleeve, and the original tape deck cleaining kit, still in plastic. We popped the hood to find the most beautiful M20 I'd ever seen. The owner had all of the cosmoline professionally removed, and every fitting, hose, and clamp were all brand new. Nothing was dirty, everything was in it's place. He took us for a drive in it (since at the time I had no license), and it was incredible. The best sounding M20 I've ever heard. Quiet as a mouse at idle, but roared to life when you stepped on the gas.
They wanted $5700 for it, and I would have paid it on the spot in cash. The only reason I didn't was because of my hospital bills, and the money I owed to the insurance company of the girl I hit when I wrecked my car. There was no way I could convince myself to spend the money on it, I just didn't have it to spend. That car will always be the one that got away.
