    E30 vs E28 M5

Ive been looking around and have found 2 88 M5s close enough to me to catch my interest. One of them was being daily driven and one day just would not start, which leads me to believe the engine internals are still in good shape. It has been sitting for a little while though. I went to look at it and it looks to be pretty well cared for. I talked them down to 3k for it.

The other is advertised as a mechanically sound car that was driven daily for over 2 years then garaged and turned into a weekend car. From the pics the paint and interior also look to be in a little bit better shape than the other one. They want 4k for it BUT it has a salvage title. Havent gotten a chance to look at this one yet and its far enough away I would have to be pretty serious about it.

Basically what Im wondering is how the M5 will feel compared to an e30. And how much of a money pit I really am getting into here? Are the maintenance costs really that much higher on the M5? FWIW the other direction I would go is to turbo my 318is. Thanks in advance

Gotta agree. Hardly see any e28s let alone an m5.

You're saying you found two decent e28 M5's each under 5 grand. Yah, ok.

chassis wise, I think the prices of parts are fairly close, a bit more expensive maybe for e28 stuff. The motor is a whole other league. The timing chain with rails and components is probably more expensive than a complete ebay turbo kit for your 318iS.

I would get the M5, can always find a cheapo e30 a bit down the road.

Im not bullshitting. Let me emphasize that one of them does not run and has been sitting. The paint is so so and the driver seat is beyond saving. They dont know what the problem is and had no way to take the car with them when they moved out of state so it just stayed at their old property. I havent seen the other one in person so I cant speak for it yet.

I still havent really had any kind of answer about how it would feel to drive vs an e30.

I've been considering an E28 M5 also. A guy I know has one for $10k. Haven't driven it yet since he's in MN, but I've heard they're not as fun to drive as the E30.

Then there's the price of parts for the engine...

E30 is gonna be more fun to whip around and tear up corners with, but the e28 will be larger (easier to transport stuff obv.), more comfortable and a lot better acceleration/torque. you need to drive one and decide what YOU WANT in a car. power? curve carving? comfort?

I hate driving my e39, but sometimes it is nice to just cruise with A/C and not hear the engine, and be able to load some crap in the car.

                          I agree.

The issue is that my E30 is pretty damn complete with a new Zinno two stage paint job, near mint M3 interior, suspension mods, etc., etc., so it's hard to let go now. Plus, I've got an E34 Touring for transporting stuff.

I need to just make the trip up there to drive it and see for myself.

                              pros: do you like torque?
                              cons: rebuild cost for s38.
