Looking to get the lip cut, widened, welded on the 2 piece 17x8 style 5s (bbs rc090) but they can only do it if the tire can be mounted from the inner side of the wheel not the face/lip side. So can you reverse mount a tire on these wheels??

i've seen it done a few times... yes its possible, what offset are your wheels? Maybe not every machine can do it idk. i'm not tire mounting expert, but i've done a few here and there at drift events. No more e30s for me.

what are you talking about? its more of a machine limitation to be able to grab the rim from the front, without damaging it. Mounting the tire from the back is no different than from the front.
doing a bit more reading [google], this is actually not that uncommon to do.No more e30s for me.

It is actually easier on the tire to reverse-mount on rc090s. The drop-center on top is very deep in the wheel and that puts a lot of stress on the bead. I've changed over countless sets on rc090s and I can tell you first hand that reverse-mount is the way to go.
This is somewhat true. Most wheels only allow for tires to be mounted one way or another. rc090s, along with a few other BMW BBS wheels, can be done either way, but they're the exception. It all comes down to where the drop-center is on the wheel. If you try to reverse-mount a tire on a wheel that isn't reverse-mount you'll only end up tearing the bead.
As far as clamping the wheel on the face, it all comes down to the equipment you have. Our changers have a changeable plastic insert on the clamps that protects reverse mount wheels. There actually isn't any metal contacting the wheel, just those plastic inserts.Comment

Meh, if you lube it well it should just slide down the barrell. We used to reverse mount just to fuck around, never ripped a tire in 3 years. This is somewhat true. Again, it depends on the wheel. With something like the rc090 is doesn't make a difference, but with almost every other wheel you have to do it the right way or you'll start tearing beads and breaking duckheads. I'm not sure what kind of changer you're using, but on the newer Coats changers that we have you simply cannot change a tire unless you have a drop-center for the bead to tuck into.Comment

We had some used and abused coats changers. I haven't done tires since 1998 though so I'm sure technology has advancedAgain, it depends on the wheel. I believe you. It's been about 2 years now since I mounted mine, and like you posted, most wheels you cannot just pick what side you want to mount/dismount from.
When I work with tires, 95% of the time it's with run on flat tires. ever mount a 30 profile RFT tire on a BMW 9.5" wide rim(E92)? fun!
BMW made us get a new mounting machine for the RFT last year, cost the boss 17,000 EUROS for the damn thing!Comment
