Swithing from synthetic to Rotella 15w-40

You must not understand sarcasm. Of course there's a M42 manual, it's sitting in my glovebox. It's the same as the M20 version except with M42 additions such as engine layout diagrams, specs, etc. If you turn to page 61 of said manual there's a little diagram with various viscosities listed and their correlation to outside temperature. In the range of 20w50 is 14 through 120 degrees. This is the vis. I run in my M42 powered car. Anything thinner I have found makes the engine start to tick after driving it for awhile in 95+ degree weather. As for "googling" you will see that's what the majority of people run. So your 10w30 recommendation for a M42 is completely inaccurate.

Also worth noting is that no where in this manual is synthetic mentioned. So I call BS unless you show proof, ie: a BMW technical bulletin.


And to the OP, 15w40 should be just fine for your climate and Rotella shouldn't be a problem. I run it occasionally if I can't find Delo 400. ;)

and it says it like 5-40 or 15 40 not 10-30

whatever guide you are following has led you to a bad place. Go ahead and ask any of million m42 owners what oil to use.

according to this it came with 5-30 from the factory. you have the one guide you should never follow the one that is wrong. ask all the m42 owners what they use

better yet type in google what type of oil goes in my m42? most m42 are in e36 and you need to look at their guide. Your welcome for looking up for you, your cars oil.

man I dont have this kind of time to waste but the worst combination in the world is rude and ignorant and they always seem to go together.

theres no way to tell from your post although a 92 318ic is rare

for the m20 I still recomend full synthetic 15 50 mobil 1just changing at 6k miles. make it a lifetime vehicle. dont even let thinner diesel dino oil touch that thing.

oil nerds would love to have a zero wear engine like that Id sell it if I were you.

Please show me where in your M42 powered E30 manual it calls for 10w30, let alone synthetic, in anything above freezing temperatures outside.

I recomend the OG mobil 1 million mile 15-50w oil with the zinc.

Even for summer only driving. change it once a year.

not the rotella. You actually have a car you should sell at auction and dont drive it.

dont worry about saving bucks on oil youre throwing about thousands by driving it at all.

That's all way too thin for an m20. They need 20w50. I don't really know why you'd put anything thinner in it unless it was super cold. I would absolutely not switch simply because you have a 59k m20 that's seemingly had synthetic for the past 20 years. It definitely doesn't need it, but it's not gonna hurt.

for real. If you use 5w-30 or 10w-30 you will hear a lot of noise from your valve train. Use the proper oil and don't listen to dumbasses that say that 5w-30 is okay for an M20.

i used to use rotella 15-40 all the time, for the money it really is good oil, but as stated bmw calls for 20w50 in the m20 and we all know we need high zinc content because of our valvetrains so i go with valvoline VR1 racing oil, its actualy pretty damn cheap and is great stuff, sure you could spend more for brad penn oil and shit but for off the shelf at autozone ect... VR1 20w50 is my vote

No, I would stay with Rotella 15W40. High detergent from Chevron might clean the engine too well that could lead to leaking down the road.
