Youre right. It runs great though.

its not like my toyota truck though that consumes no oil no matter what you put in it

    it has some ring clearance.

my m20 starts to consume oil at 10-40 in the summer. like a quart per 1000 miles especially on a road trip.

Yours may not. when I switched back to 15-50 no consuming at all.

20w50 is a pretty crappy weight for oil. maybe if you live where it's always 100f, but a 20w conventional is going to be like sludge here 9 months out of the year. Even M1 15w50 is pushing it during our mild winters but I can still get away with it, a 20w50 conventional, no way in hell..

I really want to try the 5w40 Mobil 1 turbodiesel truck oil in my M20. I put it in the subaru after trying everything else to quiet the thing down, and haven't heard a peep out of it since. Should be great all winter long and 5w40 should be fine during our mild summers. I think I can do a 7500 mile oil change no problem too, at least the subaru hasn't started getting noisy yet and it usually needs a change by 3k or it starts sounding like a diesel.

my vert came with a sedan fender and it fit for a year. So definitely fits.

Ive got another vert fender on it now though. It doesnt fit any different actually but because the last 2 inches line up better it looks better.

Im pretty sure I showed him redlines list already but the other list shows that an m42 uses 5-40 or 15-40.
Pretty much any resource including bmw will tell you that it takes a pretty deep head up your butt to contradict the world.

thats hilarious? What are you doing with your friends moms dildo?

I dont even have that shift knob anymore ive got the stock one. I got that from some bmw I took parts from.

Btw Im pretty sure that guy disapeared forever in shame.

What pisses me off is, if he spent even a minute looking up his question as opposed to writing here he would have known what his car takes immediately.

And then I even provided like 3 links, read any of them and hed know he was wrong but he still didnt read just blah blah blah.

This is the age of the internet and theres no excuse for being that ignorant.

I run these depending on how im feeling with my heavy foot!
Liqui Molly 10-60 RACE FUll syn. AMAZING and PERFECT <---- this is really good stuff not cheap but great for lapping/drift where temps can run high and your beating it!
Liqui Molly 10-40 syn : everyday driving and heavy foot action!
Motul 15-50 syn : track and heavy foot street action
Mobil 1 15-50 syn :track and heavy foot street action
Ive even run 10-30 and 10-40 Valvoline Syn just fine
In all due respect any 10-40 SYN oil will be great even with a heavy foot, these motors are tough; remember that.
Do your oil changes often and your bearings and valve train will give you the love back!
when it comes down to it, its about common sense, and peace of mind. A healthy engine to start with that is well maintained : you can't go wrong.
Ill be honest, Ive seen alot of disasters and shitty ghetto maintained engines. from the past 15 years of mechanical experience. People neglect alot and then stand there like a moron wondering why the've overheated, or it wont start, or why a rod is knocking, etc..
So maintain your motor, replace worn parts, and use your noodle when it comes to changing your oil.
    just my 2 cents
    :)

If the m42 in the e30 requires different oil than the m42 in the e36.

I have never heard of this. I will stand totally corrected if this is the case.

I know its not. However if there is anything that suggests that it is, bring it to r3vlimited, and let the ops and experts here verify this. I will be the first one to admit I must be wrong.

I will write a long poem to your brilliance.

the m20 uses the same viscosity chart? No look rocket scientist, the guide you have is incorrect, it is using the m20 oil guide and not the m42 one.

the m42 chart has 15-40 as the oil that goes off into infinity. Meaning never use an oil thicker than this it is never required.

all e30 m42 owners know to use the e36 manual ( thats why I have it downloaded because so many people have questions about it not in the bentley)

Dont take my word for this ask anyone.

you are indeed the only m42 e30 owner in the world using the chart from the actual e30 owners manual from 1991. Everyone else knows that its wrong.

whatever guide you are following has led you to a bad place. Go ahead and ask any of million m42 owners what oil to use.

according to this it came with 5-30 from the factory. you have the one guide you should never follow the one that is wrong. ask all the m42 owners what they use

better yet type in google what type of oil goes in my m42? most m42 are in e36 and you need to look at their guide. Your welcome for looking up for you, your cars oil.

    I call you an idiot.

dont sidetrack the thread with your own questions go make a thread and ask the owners what you dont know

man I dont have this kind of time to waste but the worst combination in the world is rude and ignorant and they always seem to go together.

Im dying to hear your oil advice. Definitely write this guys oil advice down on diesel oil.
Once again I went completely over your head apparently. Does the car in this photo look like an E36?

And if you knew anything about the timing components in the specific M42 version that came in an E30 you would be familiar with the issues that come from running thin oil such as chain noise, lifter noise, and other terrible noises as valve train shouldn't make.

Now for your links, maybe you should go take a look around M42club instead of posting links from the top 3 google results. Also while you are perusing the internet go take a look at what Chevron says about their Delo 400, it goes along the lines of backwards compatible with gasoline engines.

Synthetic is a completely different beast and you stated BMW said in the manual to use synthetic, it does not. The E36 manual may, but this isn't an E36, it's an E30. The E36 had 2 different revisions of the M42 from the E30 in its chassis, let alone the M44. Different designs require different standards.

As for him having a M20, I find that irrelevant at this point. It uses the same viscosity chart, but people run all kinds of things in a M20 with success, the joys of a timing belt I guess.

I would also like to point out watching your backtracking has been quite the entertainment early this morning.

It's the same as the M20 version except with M42 additions such as engine layout diagrams, specs, etc. If you turn to page 61 of said manual there's a little diagram with various viscosities listed and their correlation to outside temperature. In the range of 20w50 is 14 through 120 degrees. This is the vis. I run in my M42 powered car. Anything thinner I have found makes the engine start to tick after driving it for awhile in 95+ degree weather. As for "googling" you will see that's what the majority of people run. So your 10w30 recommendation for a M42 is completely inaccurate.

Also worth noting is that no where in this manual is synthetic mentioned. So I call BS unless you show proof, ie: a BMW technical bulletin.

And to the OP, 15w40 should be just fine for your climate and Rotella shouldn't be a problem. I run it occasionally if I can't find Delo 400. ;)
dude whats so retarded about this advice even is that the op has a different engine than you. he has an m20. So you would like to advise him on what to use in his m20 based on what you use for your m42?

thats like taking putting d cells in your walkman because your flashlight is working.

Get out of here dude. Be quiet we dont care dont be giving people advice on what oil to use. Its all good.

thats crazy I just read through 10 threads and all of them said never use 20-50 oil, use 10-30 or 10-40

and Im looking this up for you because Im concerned for you not knowing how to read. I dont even own this car. And right now I own 4 cars and should probably be looking up what to use for the next one Im changing.

I went ahead and pulled out the e36 bentley manual for you buddy

and it recomends 2 different viscosities. it recomends 5 -30 and 15-40 depending on your climate.

page 30, for the m42 and the m44 e36 318. It says on the chart "BMW SPECIAL FLUID RECOMENDED" not required it says api sj energy saving fluid. BMW was the first manufacturer to recomend fully synthetic fluid, but not require it. Its required in the m3 and m5.

That was up to date as to the time the m42 was made.

it has a chart that would seem to suggest 15-40 is better for most climates though definitely.
