My hex socket doesn't fit with a ratchet behind it.

So i put a wrench on the hex and use that to turn it.

I have actually never had this problem. I switch diffs so often I just change fluid when it is out of the car.

Cut the tip of your socket down.

For large allens in tight spaces i usually end up cutting an inch or so off the long side of an allen wrench, inserting it in the plug and putting a box end wrench on it. Thats only if none of my allen sockets work, though.

I use 3/8 allen sockets, the Craftsman fits with a ratchet behind it.

I don't remember having an issue with the diff, I might have pulled the wrench on socket trick as stated above and all my stuff is craftsman. I DO remember having to saw my craftsman hex socket shorter to fit the fill plug on the trans however.
