Im looking for a good campervan and unfortunately Westfalia went bankrupt so you cant get them new anymore. As best as I can tell the one to get is a synchro with a subaru engine but they cost more than most new cars. Anyone ever own one? Are they reliable, fun, etc.?

Heavy and underpowered with the VW boxter motor.
You can also swap in a 1.8-2.0 lt A2 or A3 motor as long as it is a water cooled motor. You will need to source a special factory diesel oil pan because the motor will sit on an angle . The diesel vanagons used the same motor as the diesel A2/3 cars. I can't remember if it bolts up to the bell housing directly or you need a diesel bell housing also.seien Sie größer, als Sie erscheinen

It just depends on what you are looking for and what you can find.
Westies and VW's in general are pulling a lot more momey then they used to. Most everything you find is going to need suspension maintenance and maybe a motor. The water cooled vanagon motors always had head to block seal issues and the heads would rot out rather quickly if the improper coolant mix or no coolant was used.
Air cooled T4 motored campers are not only gutless, but suffer from the seat comming loose in the heads. if it has been overheated even once, they are comming loose at some time.
WTF? you live in NC, what kind of pretentious neighbors do you gave?
Just be aware that most any camper you pick up will be hitting the point ehen things are going to be worn out and you will be putting money into that in addition to the purchase price. At that point a UNIMOG camper may not seem like such an expensive purchase.seien Sie größer, als Sie erscheinen

My dad has had like 10. I only remember 3 or 4 of them ever running. When they were running though, they were awesome. My family drove one from VA to CA one summer... comfortably. A Westy is one of the cars I hope to own once I have more money and space for toysWhat it feels like owning an e30:

EDIT: 89K and change haven't been to UK in some time so the dollar has gotten stronger there. Ah didn't notice T5 is the old Multivan vs a rebadged Chrysler. Still that is a lot of scratch for a Multi vanLast edited by M-technik-3; 09-17-2012, 06:57 PM.
