Should I jump on this M50? Now with Pic

Found an E36 with M50 in a junk yard no numbers on the back so I think it is a 323i, the condition of the car is very poor which leads me to believe the engine was not maintained, unknown miles as the odmeter has been taken. I can pick it up for $600.

Considering it will probably require a rebuild, what say you R3V should I take it.

Aren't M50's and other 24v engines usually crazy expensive in Upside Down Land?

My initial reaction was definitely not, but then remembered you were form Australia. Not sure the going rate, but here in the states that would be considered highway robbery.

      '91 318is - OBD-II S52 swapped - E30 M3 5-lug - 5x120 BBS RC090 (E39 Style 5) - TCK D/A coilovers 550/700 [SOLD]
      '87 535i - Vacuum brake conversion [SOLD]
      '93 525iT - 5-speed swap - 320k and counting
      '09 328xi - 6-speed

Yeah, I wouldn't take that for more than $300ish, but we have to know what they're worth in Australia to help you make a decision.

So you're getting it for slightly less than half of a normal price. If a normal price for an m50 around here from a private party with known mileage and condition is around $800, then $600 could be a good deal for that engine.

Well I wasn't really looking I just cam across it. I might even be able to get him down to $450.

If I am going to go M50 it will be a boosted M50, and if I go boosted it will be a rebuilt M50.

I think it is a good deal so I think I will jump on it. I can always resell anyways if I have to.

You can run the VIN on the car to find out what model it's out of. (You said you thought 323i?)

Hell, I'd try to get him down just based on the description you gave us of it's physical appearance and what we can guess it's maintenance history was like. Could be a gold mine, could be a can of worms.

Even if you plan to rebuild it or rebuild it for boost- you don't want to deal with a cracked head, etc. I'd hope for the best, but plan for the worst. ::knocks on wood::

Get it. Considering what your plans are and the price of an m50 in the market this is calling out your name. Best case scenario, you pay the full 600, you would have 700 to just use to get it running in good condition which I think should be plenty of cash to do so. You can keep it at that point or sell it.

If you bargain for less and rebuild at the lowest possible quality budget, there is no way you do not come out a winner. Unless there is a gross amount of dog hair in the head.

ok well I am going to get it. Now the question is weather I can get it out 1 hour, as that is all I have for my lunch break. I think there should be no problem.
