lol using a E30 as the DD with an E90 as the weekend will never happen.

It will be the E90 as the DD and the E30 as the Weekender. It is really that simple a E90 is a great DD comphy has all the luxuries and is easy, an E30 is a fun car to drive and not something that is great for DD.

Anyways well done and welcome to the addiction.

My weekend consist of driving the wifey around, I doubt she'll want to ride in the E30 that's still a WIP.

+1 to what massimo said. i regret selling my e46 when i got the e30 since they serve two distinct purposes. what i should have done was parted out the stuff unnecessary to a DD (coilovers, etc), and spent on the e30 (which is being transformed into a streetable track car).

but you're right... i'm probably down $7.5k and i'm still not done! i just competed in a friendly race last month and the e30 needs better tires, bucket seats, new brakes... just don't tell my wife :P

I actually picked up a job on the side, to make money that I dont necessarily need to survive, simply to buy far too many parts for my E30.

It is definitely an addiction. Though to be honest, even if they came up with a cure, I wouldnt get it. Because doing what I do, and doing what the E30 does, makes me happy. And that is what life is all about.

I don't get this attitude. The E30 was used as a DD by millions of people for years, and suddenly it's not good enough to drive anymore?

I also don't get having a car that just sits in the garage. It's just a hunk of metal, use the damn thing like it's meant to be used. If my E30 sat in the garage 90% of the time I'd have to sell it because it would piss me off that it just sat there not being used.

                  +1 to the above post

3 years ago I went from an e46 to an e30 and I like the e30 so much more. I've been daily driving an e30 ever since then and would never go back. It would take a lot to convince me to leave the e30 for another car.
People that say they would rather DD an e46 or e90 don't sound like real enthusiasts.

because there are more comfortable, quieter, more fuel efficient cars, with more tractable power bands, more creature comforts, great sound systems, brighter headlamp output, and better road manners that have been made in the 20-odd years since.

not that i want one anyway but some people drive a lot of highway miles and the e30 is, in my opinion, ill-suited to that type of driving.

nando, VinniE30: when you have the commute i have man, you'll definitely change your mind - i average 3-4hours on the road a day. the refinement and fuel economy of a newer car makes a huge difference then. i do wish i could DD an e30, but it's just not practical with the new technologies and fuel prices. i'd love to have a 330d e46 for a DD if i could afford it. the e30 would then be free to be my toy, with no compromises to be made for DD use.

then again, maybe i'm getting old. :p me 15 years ago would probably kick the crap out of me now.

Comfortable? That's subjective. and I think my e30 is just as comfortable as an e46. This all depends on your seats too. Many people with e30s don't have stock seats... there's lots of nice options out there.

Quieter? Newer 3 series are definitely quieter than an e30. But I couldn't care less about this. If I had to say, then i'd say I actually prefer the more pronounced road/wind and engine noise of the e30.

More fuel efficient? We're talking about e46 and e90 here so i'll use this as an example. An eta or m42 e30 gets just as good gas mileage if not better. If you want power then a 24v swap will get you very good gas mileage and also lots of power.

More tractable power bands? Depends on engine but a 24v swap or M30 swap combined with the much much lower weight of the e30 makes for great pickup in stop and go traffic. Probably better than any e46. And any non-turbo e90. Overall a VANOS 24v swap will have a very "tractable" power band.

more creature comforts, great sound systems, brighter headlamp output?
All those things can be upgraded on an e30. But I don't really care about creature comforts. I've found after having newer daily drivers that I highly value simplicity in a car. Less distractions, less things to break, more minimalist, more of what a "pure" car.

So don't get me wrong, I completely understand why different people drive newer cars but they should also understand why for someone like me and probably many other people on here, an e30 is just as good if not better.

I'd rather stab myself in the balls.

also, it sounds like you're talking a stock E30. Most of those things are solved with common upgrades. My only "stereo" is an inline 6 BTW. :p

3-4 hours? dude, that really sucks. I'd also rather stab myself in the balls than drive that far for work. I understand it's not that easy to just change your job or home. that's fair enough, although driving an appliance for 4 hours a day would drive me batty. I'd hate to waste basically 1/4 of my day driving to work. my drive is about 10-15 minutes each way and 5 of that is probably getting coffee and/or breakfast. Guess I can count my blessings.

Well I have been DDing my car now for 6 months take me an hour to drive to work and a hour home. No not on a freeway in slow 60km/h roads with lots of traffic lights. Yes my E30 is a lot of fun to drive, but I find my self wanting something newer with climate control, autotragic, smooth taking off, safer (lots of crazy people in peak hour traffic). No matter what E30 you have it will not compare to a newer model car, even if you rebuilt it to spec.

The E30 needs to be driven and driven hard, I just can't do that in peak hour traffic, if a toyota camery fits the bill then yes I will drive a toyota camery.

I would be happy to DD my E30 if it only took me 10 min to get to work.
