    T. Bellt went Kaput! What kind of damage?

I found a car for sale (read cheap) with a 'damage head' due to t.belt failure. Can anything else beside the head be damaged due the broken timing belt? The owner claims bent shafts.
Thanks for the help, I would hate let pass a good deal.

$2k +-. Needs new valves and probably rockers. If the camshaft is damaged there is some more $$.

A whole functional m20 is less than a grand.

Or buy a used cheap head off a wrecked car... I've seen them go as low as 50 bucks.

Yup. $1000 is less than $2k and so is $50. It all depends on how you go about fixing it. If you take it do an independent shop it will cost around $2k to fix. Good idea to rebuild the head while its off the car. If you fix it your self then good. It all depends on what is wrong and how you want it fixed. Do you want it fixed properly or a hack job? Can you do the work your self or are you going to send it out and have a shop fix it? $200-$2k+ depending on the above.

You have many things that could be broken. Head could be cracked or damaged (replace), Valves are bent (replace), Rockers broken (replace), Camshaft bent or damaged (replace), Pistons damaged (rebuild on motor).

You don't just want to buy a used head and slap it on the car. Clean the head and replace seals and guides. Mill the head and install new belt and head gasket. Depending on how much work you can do your self you are atleast looking at $500+ to do it properly. I would give it $1k budget with you doing all the R&R.

The difference between your option and my option is cost and piece of mind.

Any head removed from a decent condition running motor will be in fair enough shape to just toss on and get going.

Not everybody has the budget nor the time to do the amount of work that we consider correctly done.

Needless to say. A good used head that is in nice shape, a new timing belt and tensioner, and a headgasket + stud kit WILL get the motor running again. Assuming not a ton of piston damage, and even if a little is there the motor will still run.

The head that I installed on my car had 120Kish miles on it, and all I replaced was the cam seal, nothing more, and its been great with 165psi across the board. Sometimes you can find ones in that good of shape.

            food for thought.

i bought a car in the same situation. i would say that 2000 is high, but like everyone else said it depends how it's done. I had my head remanuactured and it cost me around $400. that was for 8 new valves, valve seats a couple rockers a rocker shaft, resurfacing etc. seeing how i did the rest of the work myslef, it kept the cost down. i don't think that a complete rebuild o fmy head would have done any better of a job. so just do research on what yo want.

Hey-hey, I know what kaputt means. German 1 wasn't a complete waste of a semester after all..

certainly, but it is a good idea to at least check the head for flatness, and also replace the cam seal while you have it off. no reason to put it all together and realize you have to do it again because the head is not flat or something is leaking.

Do you want me to add up my receipts?

My belt went kaput at 57K miles. Granted there were some track miles on it, but I was still pissed, as the factory recommended interval is 60K. The real pisser is that I had the belt, tensoiner, water pump, etc. sitting in my garage, ready to be changed out.

Here's what I (and my machinist) found:
                    8 bent exhaust valves
                    1 bent intake valve
                    1 broken rocker
crack in head (could be repaired by light welding)

I spent $480 for the R&R of the head. Add another $300 or so for belts, hoses, "incidentals" (plugs, dist cap and rotor, other while I'm in there stuff), and the total will be about $800.

BTW, I didn't cheap out on the work. The guy that did my head also did my Porsche machine work, and did a fabulous job. I plan to track the car again, and want it to run right. I thought about the used head thing, but I would have most likely ended up with a head that needed a rebuild anyway.

Radiator and fluids go back in tonight, hopefully I'll have it running tommorow.

                    Good Luck,
                    Jim
