A friend has an FRS and I've had a chance to drive it. I like it. The steering is very sharp. The seating position is excellent. The engine is a little uninspiring. The same $25k will buy a good used Lotus Elise. Another ~$6k puts a supercharger on it and takes it to 260 hp in a 2000 lb car. I like the FRS. But I love the Elise.

An Sti version of the car would be pretty darn fun to drive.

280 doesn't seem like a whole lot these days, I mean I know the car is 2758 lbs but still. Why couldn't they just really tune it out to 300.. or more?

Well, i'm sure Cobb Tuning will be able to fix that problem. I'm a huge Subaru fan and it would be interesting to go back to a Subie again.

I just don't think I want to spend 32k (or whatever it will come out to) on another car. The nice thing about the E30 is that it doesnt cost anything to drive but gas and insurance.

If my E30 ever feels slow I can always supercharge it at Castros or something.

I've sat in a FRS and let me tell you, it's FREAKING tiny. The E30 has ALOT more interior volume and luggage space. It's a totally different class when it comes to room. STI BRZ sales will not eat into WRX sales simply because it can't haul jack crap.

I'm 5'6 165 lbs and the FRS made me feel like I was wearing spandex when I sat inside. The backseats are TOTALLY useless unless you just want to stuff a backpack or something back there,

I think it's a great car, but I still can't have more fun driving anything else beside my E30. I've been cursed.

Oh no, a car company is actually building a car that is similar to what enthusiasts want. Oh the horror.

I'm graduating soon with a secure job in mechanical engineering and am in the position to replace my college car, an M52 E30. After a little research, I was psyched to go test drive an FRS. Same power to weight as my e30, the reliability of a Toyota, and I even dig the styling. So, I went to two dealerships only to be told they absolutely needed a $500 deposit to drive the ($25k) car. No warranted insults to the absurdity of this rule would cause them to budge. They explained this was due to the demand and rarity of the FRS. Even though this a temporary issue, I can't help but weigh the cost vs benefits of the FRS. We all know the stats.

I can't imagine it being $20k more fun than a 24v e30. I wasn't one bit regretful leaving in my e30. I park where I want, beat it without a second thought, pay nothing in insurance and the list goes on. The more I thought about it, the FRS is nice but I'm damn happy with my e30.
Other than the feeling of driving a new car versus an old car, not to mention the reliability of it. I see what you are saying though, $6000 for s5x swap or $25k new car with similar specs.

    Nice.
So it basically matches an S52-E30 in power and weight.

Still... it couldn't be more different than an e30 in looks... it's just another ugly looking new car.
That would be a VERY healthy S52 with the usual bolt-ons....
