owned my 2000 Frontier XE since 2004, great work truck, never let me down, very comfortable, issue free, had 3" lowering blocks on it for awhile, consistently get 22 plus gas mileage when I drive like a puss, mostly it gets 18-20 because I love to drive the crap out of that little 2.4L

Yeah, I checked out local Hardbody's, T100's, Tacoma's, Rangers, and S10's... Found a few possibilities but much less than I was expecting. I was reading into it some and it seems like the only way I'd go for one is if it was 4-cylinder manual.

The Tahoe is mechanically flawless, except in its own nature of getting about 8 mpg, having only two doors (fine until you have a baby), and only the driver side seat folds down (according to girlfriend who drives it).

I've seen a few of those Rabbit trucks for sale, and although they are interesting, I would forever wish it was just a normal Rabbit...

I'll have to expand my truck search to Phoenix...

HOW the hell are you only getting 8 MPG with that?????? Even in full on city traffic with 3:73's and the A/C on full bore 14 should be about what you should be getting. Try doing a damm tune up, stop running 85 octane. You have something wrong with that SUV if thats all your getting for mileage, unless she is leaving it sitting there running all day while she is shopping or in class or something. I still have a 99 tahoe as well, and we get about about 16-19 mpg averages

The pass seat will slide and fold forward, you might just have to replace the ratchet lever about 35 bucks and 20 mins to do.

I get the need for kids and more doors, but why would you be looking at SMALLER 2 DOOR "trucks" if this was of primary concern

My 03 Ranger Off Road step-side club cab 4.0 liter manual shift is big enough to be usefull, can tow, has four wheel drive and low range, and gets about 17 city and 21 highway on 97 octane fuel. It's ride is pretty lumpy on bad pavement though.

Don't even bother with a small truck, get a 1/2 ton you're going to be using the same amount of fuel with it plus its nice to have that extra utility of a bigger truck.

Or do a tune up on your Tahoe, 8mpg is ridiculous.

The best you will be able to do in a small truck fuel economy wise is around 18-23mpg. They are not overly fuel efficent and the only reason people buy them is to either own a truck to have a truck, or like me to have an offroad truck.

I am personally a Toyota fan boy on this one. I love my old 94 pickup. However they do rot pretty quickly. The old 22r is a great engine, but lacks any sort of power, while the 3 litre is still pretty gutless, and loves to eat the head gaskets. The Tacoma's are great, and if you can find a rotten 99 you can get the frame replaced at Toyota no cost (they had early rot syndrome and Toyota replaces the frame if the truck is 15 years old). Good luck finding a double cab though.

I like those little toyota's from the 90's. I've seen some around here that look pretty good a little lowered with the right set of wheels. I'm sure they run forever too.

Ok, it probably gets better than 8mpg, can't get the girlfriend to check it (don't blame her when it's ~$100 to fill it up), I just remember EPA rating it close to that.

Yeah, looks like the only truck I'd really be interested in is an old Datsun 720 because they can actually get 25-30 mpg city.

                        Beat me too it lol.

                        BTW
EPA rating for a 4wd 99 was 12 in the city, ours does better than that with normal driving. Its a 30 gallon tank of course its around a 100 to fill it from empty.

Fix your tahoooo then drive up to scottsdale and my roommate tune it. You can put pacesetter long tubes on it and tune it for mileage and get in the high teens.

There is a lot you can change to help out from the factory tune.

I have a 98 2wd, 4 cylinder 5 speed Frontier that I bought new. 225k flawless miles. One clutch and a couple sets of rotors. Around 30 freeway (best is 32), 25-27 mixed. I towed my trailer 8800 miles to Alaska and back and adveraged 23.

Tahoe doesn't have any problems, I'm sure it actually gets mileage somewhere in the mid-teens, but it'd be much nicer to have something getting closer to 30 mpg.. And four doors...

In the last month I've found four of the cleanest Rabbits in PA, and there hasn't been one clean one for sale in AZ for over six months... Maybe it's just Rabbit-ville over there..

I will tell you now that if you are looking for 30 mpg, you aren't looking for a truck. Even the most frugal small trucks will be in the 20's.
