I understand you're frustrated it was towed when it could have been driven, but that could be a matter of policy. Understandable. The "Loss Type: Collision" stickers put on it by IAA seems a little premature, yeah. Probably a mistake on someone's part to assume it was a loss.

I'm not so sure this is something worth calling the police over. No one's selling your car.
This is why police have not been involved. My car isint up for sale (Yet) . Its just really sketchy.

The quarter panel was fucked up when it was rear ended. It Might be totaled :/.

If they Dont release my car to me tomarrow the police will be getting called. If they are gonna take my car I want my plates off of it and all my stuff out of the car.

This is why I pay top dollar for quality insurance
Im going through the dude that hit me's insurance. Not my own.

I always wondered if you could just tell them to fuck off with their compensation for the totaled car and keep the thing.

You can choose not to go through insurance and fix it on your own. If you go through insurance and they total it out, there is always an amount you can buy it back for, but then it will have a branded title.

I am an estimator for one of the larger insurance companies. You describe a similar process that I think many companies use in some form or another. When a loss (claim) is reported, the initial information regarding the vehicle and damage is input through an algorithm that makes a basic (VERY basic) determination of the whether the vehicle may be repairable. If there is a high potential that the car is a total loss (likely due to the model year of your vehicle in this case) then they are sent to a local auction house the ins. co. has contracted with. The vehicle is held there for an adjuster to write the estimate. Your car was likely inventoried by IAA as a procedural step, not because they're going to sell it. Once a determination has been made on whether or not the car is repairable, that is usually when you hear from your adjuster to discuss your options. The reason many companies do this is because it saves a step in the process (and money, not gonna lie) for when the car actually is a total loss and does wind up getting sold at auction. For an ins. co. that does business nationwide, the money they shell out on a daily basis for tows from place to place is incredible. It's another step to save money and keep premiums down (seriously).

If the car wasn't drivable from the scene, why was it not towed to your destination of choice? Either the shop of your choice or your home.

INSURANCE COMPANIES ARE NOT YOUR FRIEND!! They make money by paying as little as possible. Know your rights, read your contract.

Fuck that. Any car in my name goes nowhere without my permission until I sign off on the title. It goes to the repair facility of my choosing and doesn't go anywhere else without my permission. That's how it's always been and that's how it always will be. It's MY car until I sign it off to the insurance company if they want to total it out.

                  This.

After my ordeal with my Alfa last year, any and all Insurance companies are scum. They are not there to fix the wrong, they are there to make themselves rich. They will do anything and everything to screw you no matter who was guilty. Insurance adjusters and agents are like bad used car dealers, they act all friendly and nice but in the end they are looking to make a profit off you.

Just my experience. Good luck with that.

                    Small update today.

Called his insurance. Got what they want to pay me. They say $1600 if i keep it, $1900 of they keep it.

Of course i want to keep it, i could part it out or sell it as a track car for much more then $300.

Granted I spent $1800 when i bought it and put $1200 or more into it. In faxing all the parts receipts to them tonight .

$1600 isint too bad as the car has 262k on it and needed alittle body work pre-accident. But im gonna try to get more out of it.

Have to call IAA in Taunton and pick it up tomarrow , they REFUSE to tow my car back to me . I talked to them for 45 minutes explaining how retarded it is i have to pick my car up when they told me they would bring it back to me.

USAA are scumbags all in all.

As blackspeed said its a money saving technique .

Sucks your having issues. I had this happen a couple of times but I have learned since. Whenever your in an accident that requires a tow truck, I always have them tow it to my residence. the insurance adjuster or whoever can come out and look at it, or they can arrange towing at a later date. Always gotta stay in control.

never herd of a insurance company just coming and taking your car, they usually show up at your house and look over the car then give you the dollar amount. Things start from there but never tow the car away, that's BS
