while you guys are talking about alternators who makes a decent alternator for our cars? I would like to say BMW does but I dont want to know the price of one is. And what is the amp draw supposed to be with our cars off. Just Curious,
Also my car died in the middle of a busy intersection during rush hour and I was stuck their for 45 minutes before a cop showed up to push my car(by push I mean with his crown vic) because for some reason a cop can give you jump. then I was stuck in bumville nowhere kansas for 8 hours waiting for someone to bring me a charged battery. And I have blown 2 radiator hoses going over railroad tracks.

Originally posted by BM5WIn my experience when an alternator goes out. The brushes are worn out and not making contact. You can buy new brushes for cheap and just replace them. I haven't had to do that on he E30 yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if you could replace it without taking the alternator out.
As far as "brushes" being toast, yes, you can replace the voltage regulator (which has the brushes built into it) without too much trouble as long as you remove the airbox/AFM assembly. It's held on by two screws.

had my alternator fail twice. once at a busy intersection in downtown DC during morning rush hour. the second on a cold rainy night.
replaced it with an old alternator after the first incident. after the second i realized it was a bad alt ground cable. since then i've been fine.
i feel your painJames

hey I was stranded in a hotel room, 250-300 miles from home, in the middle of South Dakota, after 7 state troopers caught us on the hwy which had been closed for over a day... we were trying to fix my front caliper which happened to fall off... and didn't have anyone to bring me parts.
This is after making it through the Utah mountains, and the Colorado mountains, in snow storms, with worn out Eagle F1's on back, and Falken Zeix on front.
So yes, it coulda been worse :)
