Making a solid mounted race shifter?

Sup guys I want a shifter like the AKG or Bimmerworld one but its really out of my price range right now. Could you just take a square piece of metal, drill the 3 holes for the mounting screws, one big one for the shifter and weld the cup onto there?

I also saw someone mention that you can get a early shifter carrier and cut it to size and mount it on top but I also saw that newer style shifters wont fit so thats kind of a bust

    Any ideas?

whats wrong with getting a short shifter...then save money for a quickshifter, theres one on rev for like 300 bucks, akg

I'm sorry if I sound like a dick but...

Either save up until you can afford a used one or go without. Unless you have a good idea and the skill to pull it off then just pay for someone else's R&D.

Just use a early sheet metal carrier and trim it down and bolt it in.

Just don't use stock engine/trans mounts with it or the engine/tranny will move too much.

I doubt they would since you gain 2" by mounting it in the car. It is a cheap fast fix!

So if I go the early shifter carrier route, what shifters would I be able to use? Just the early one?

Info I saved... to use late shifter per photo above ^^^

'Your car has the mounting points already. It mounts where part of the Automatic shifter mounts, and the rear mounts on the stud that holds the center console. I can't think of any downsides... I mean, this is how some of the DTM cars did it. I was even able to install the selector rod from inside the car, since there's no carrier in the way

You've gotta have stiff/solid engine and tranny mounts or else the shifter will move around under hard braking/turning/acceleration.

Installed a z3 1.9 lever and all new oem hardware in a metal console. No issues, very nice upgrade from stock worn out shifter.

Buy 1 upper ball cup, 2 lower ball cups and sand one of the two lower cups down in order to fit all 3 in the metal console and lock with the circlip. Cut the upper ball cup with a sharp blade and slip on the shift lever. Replaced all worn out hardware and enjoy !

Pelican had the cups if youre careful you can reuse the lock ring

I am running the sheet metal console with an E36M3 shifter and no problems. The shifter balls are all the same.

Does it make a difference that the metal shifter carrier will be mounted from the top instead of the bottom? would the bottom of the shifter have to be longer to accommodate the extra inch or so gained or does it still work at an angle?

It works better, assuming you're installing a short-throw shifter, because the raised pivot point puts the selector rod at a more level angle. Also, it's a lot easier to install and remove from the top.
