    Looking to repaint our 325i

Who's the best aftermarket paint service (as far as places like Maaco, Earl Scheib, etc.) are concerned? We're looking just for a cheap respray for our Brillantrot 325i, as the paint on the hood is in bad shape and is faded/oxidized badly everywhere else.

Well, I had a Maaco job and it was $650. Included in the price was: paint (3 coats), some body work, NO clear coat. It wasnt' bad, they got careless with some parts of the car.....

It looked great for the first few months. The paint beaded with water and eveyrthing. I could see my reflection. It was heaven. I was getting a steal of a deal. Then after 1 year, I couldnt' wax it anymore because it somehow left swirl marks in the paint from the wax-job and I couldnt' get rid of it. The paint became pitted, the old rust spots started showing through it and I could tell that If i didnt' do something fast, i would need a new paint job... so i sold it and got another bimmer (for other reasons,, not just the piant).. Just my personal experience with Maaco.

You could get this urethane clear coat in the package, you'll pay more, but it will only prolong the inevitable by a year or 2... it's cheap materials and always will be.

You get what you pay for with maaco..

What Francis said is pretty spot on. These paint jobs aren't made to last. That being said, if you take really good care of it, they can look good and last you a reasonable amount of time for the money. You might consider doing the major prep work yourself though. Some areas won't need it, but if you take care of rust and major issues yourself before hand you will have better luck.

If they have a collision center yes. My BMW dealer sends their cars to get painted to another local american car dealer. They auctually do a really good job though. the bmw dealer used to send their cars just to some guys house about an hour or so out of town to get resprayed or bodywork done, I dont know what happened to him

The idea about paint is you get what you pay for most anywhere.

If youre going to get maaco, you might as well just go pick up some spray paint and do it yourself.

I'd say look into some independent shops.

Oh I am, just wondering about what the best "chain" place is... I already have a small independent shop in mind not too far from here, does great work for dirt cheap.

fox collision, they are new in our area but are supposed to pretty good and have a excellent national rep. they quoated me 2450 for taking the doors off and taking the hood and trunk off and the windows out. I am shooting for around next fall I dont want to do it right before winter so it may wait til spring 2007.

You get what you pay for. Its going to be the same quality no matter where you go. Its just a cheep job and always will be. If you do all of the body work and sand, remove trim etc on the car before they paint it, it can last along time. A base coat/ clear coat is the best but if needed be a single stage will be just fine.

Well, I think I've decided on a local shop in town, I'll be doing most of the prep work (removing all exterior trim, bumpers, etc.) and pulling/popping/filling in all the little dings and such. I went over the car with a fine toothed comb yesterday to check for rust, and so far haven't found a speck, which is a big sigh of relief.

As far as paint is concerned, it's going to be a base/clear, resprayed in the original color... updates to come.

What I meant by prep work wasn't removing trim and bumpers and such. I meant preparing the painting surface by sanding, stripping, filling whatever is needed. I think that you gathered that much but hopefully your car has no serious issues and they will save you a lot of time.

brilliant rot is just a 1 stage paint from the factory. there is no reason to waste money on getting a 2 stage paint. all non- metallic colors from BMW are 1 stage. I sprayed a bunch of stuff on my winter car, before the winter, and its really not worth the extra money for 2 stage on a red car. it will just blush, and fade anyway- something to do with the pigments in the color- same with silver shades.
