At 16,000 made, it's not a crazy rare car. Only the nice examples will keep climbing in value in a way that actually gains value.

There's a massive difference between driving a car for free, and investing in a car.

    1) Storage costs. How much does that extra garage spot actually cost you?
    2) Maintenance. It needs to sit there and not be driven, and that has it's own costs.
    3) Insurance and registration. Even if you aren't driving it (which you shouldn't) these things still cost you.

That's the start of it. Get one and realize that you're driving a car free of depreciation.
Drive it hard. Maintain it well.

It feels like in 2011 or so the automotive press had a collective epiphany and started praising the E30 M3 to no end, and are still doing so.
