They somehow know all about wheel strength and metallurgy to say its safe to drill and fill their cast aluminum wheels and they've been to 100mph+ on a backroad while blasting past a school bus so you KNOW they're good.

OP's got a good point. Knock-off companies make it hard for smaller companies to innovate and do the R&D when someone else makes a lower-quality version of their part for cheaper.
