Hahah... I'd like to see what happens when you get to one, with cars parked on both sides, on a one way street, and about 20 cars worth of NY'ers and cabs behind you freaking out b/c you've stopped in the middle of the street with no one in front of you.

Sounds pretty similar to Seattle roads. Except we have giant slabs of cement uplifted, metal plates, holes, rail road tracks, and steep hills. You have it easy in NY.

Having lived and dealt with both and currently Boston. New York City wins hands down, not even a competition, for shitier roads.

Now I get it, the manhole covers are the width of an e30? Is that why you can't hug one side of the lane or the other?

Everybody thinks the worst roads in the world are right in their backyard. They suck in almost every urban area.

Wow that's rough. Sort of why I don't want to go much lower with my car.

                Stock ride height FTW!!!

Almost took out my oil pan one day on my way to work. went over a HUGE speed bump a little too fast and heard a SCRAPE sound. After that I immediatly stopped the car at the red light and hopped out to inspect the damage. Luckily it was just the plastic belly pan under the engine that made contact with the pavement.
If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

Haha, I bought my M3 just down the street from there at 53rd and Queens Blvd. After driving it all over NYC for an hour, I'll never again complain about the roads in Ohio. The huge 1" steel plates held down with curled over rebar hooks freaked me out. All I could think about was shattering the EVOIII splitter and oil pan. Luckily, the car was on H&R sports at the time and had just enough clearance.

Nah I was just trying to make a point to someone responding "learn how to drive, a manhole is easy to avoid" or "You have it easy in NY". And yes, on certain streets here there actually isn't too much room. But it does really all depend.

The point is, that in a place like this there is a lot more to it. Road conditions aside, this is a very fast paced city. The Avenues span 5 or 6 lanes and the Streets are usually about 1 or 2 lanes. You are constantly surrounded by pedestrians, bicycles, cars, and cabs that genuinely don't give a rats ass. I don't think the speed limit goes higher than 35, and no one abides by it on the Avenues. Of course every city has this, but it is soooo much worse in NYC that it shouldn't even be compared to any other place in the US. Seriously.

Combine all of this with a bad road condition, bad weather, less light, and sometimes things can't be avoided. As in you are either gonna get rear ended, clip someone or something, or just get taken by surprise.

And don't get me wrong. Not every road here is horrible. And I am not even going to claim that the roads here are worse then any other city. BUT it is always moving quickly. What happened to the OP can happen to anyone here. I've driven in LA, San Diego, Boston, Philadelphia, and the shit show that is DC. Driving in any one of those places is like driving in the suburbs when compared to NY.

I'm normally one to believe (although I don't say it much) that many oil pan breaks are normally negligence by the driver, but NYC is fucking brutal. It's a pretty fun place to drive imo, but never, ever a lowered car. Last time I was there I drove a honda odyssey and nearly bottomed out on some dips. I don't even know what I'd do if I encountered something like that in the e30, some of these things in that city are really unavoidable.

I haven't been to seattle for probably like 8-9 years, so I can't speak for there, but NYC is tough as hell to drive in.

BTW did you damage your upper pan?
The first car I ever rode in was an e30
