    California smog-testing problem.

My 1990 vert has an aftermarket exhaust installed two owners back The last time it was smogged it posted good numbers. Thing is, the PO was a county prosecutor and I'm thinking the smog shop may have cut him a favor and overlooked the aftermarket header. Now, almost two years later it's time to get it passed again. The header does not have a tag on that is readily visible and one smog tech I approached through a friend said no shop would pass it.
A shop I use regularly for non-BMW work suggested just not mentioning it to them when it comes due, this was about eight months ago, and see what happens. Another option would be to travel seventy miles to Roseville and take it to the shop that passed it previously.
I wouldn't mind having it back to stock. Any thoughts on how to best approach this situation. It's early and I still ahve some time. Thanks.

Depends on how anal they are on the visual. Don't worry about it too much and find a shop that will run it.

Does having it fail mean I can't take it to another shop?

          Cali smog sucks
Take it to a no-pass-no-pay station; if it doesn't pass because of visual, then you know why. Change it out and retake the test at a regular smog place

every time i got a visual fail i wasn't even on the rollers yet. my experience in 2010:

first three techs just looked at the ITB setup and said "no", "hell no", or some variation/excuse.

fourth tech looked, looked at me, said "this is an M3, right?"

i said "yes sir, it is."

begin smog test, pass sniffer, pay the man/say thanks, drive away.
