I got accepted to Penn. State

I got accepted to Penn. State Erie, go me!

I'm probably going to end up going there; Renssalaer is too expensive.

Anyway, I'm looking to buy a laptop for the first time, i dont like compaq much, but i want one that will serve all kinds of purposes, but nothing so fast cuz i dont plan on gaming on the laptop. i want it to be wireless, so i can go around the campus and be able to do code somewhere other then my dorm. oh btw, i'm a comp. engineering major, so yea.

    any ideas on brands/models

    max i'm spending is 1200.00

    thanks

      I have a 12" iBook G4 800 that I got for $949.

Can you say durable? Fast, portable, lightweight, 5+ hour battery life....

Do you have a good reason to get a laptop? I've been through three years of college and have never once wished that I had one (I'm a Pre-Med Student too, so I've taken a TON of science and lab classes). You can usually get a much more powerful desktop fo the same price. You can also diagnose your own hardware problems. Does Penn. State have a lot of computer facilities? Here at Uof Oregon we have a ton so there is pretty much always one available.

(Or you could go to Wake Forrest... they give every freshman a free Thinkpad)

          Congrats.

I'm going to get a Dell Inspiration or whatever 1100. Their like base laptop, good stuff. Meets all the recommendations Purdue tells me, minus more GB's and I should get a wireless card. The entire academic campus where I will be at is wireless, so yay! I'll take notes (I hate writing), be able to do work anywhere, and I could also use SMT6. Those are three good reasons to get a laptop......especially more if your comp engineering.

What platform do the computer engineering programs run on. My roommate at Gonzaga wanted to get a Mac, but all of the programs that the school used for mechanical engineering (his major) were for PC.

I've also felt the same...no use for a laptop, at least at my school. Build your own desktop, you get exactly what you want, and it will be way more powerful.

Exactly. I built my own desktop and I've been rockin' it for three years now... and it still kicks ass!

yea, i know about desktops. I've been building them since i was 12. The one i have now was built 3 years ago and still kicks ass. That said, I dont want to be typing code/programs in a chair infront of my desk for hours. I want a portable computer so that i can go around campus and take notes in class, type wherever i want, and not have to worry about lots of diskets and such.

i considered imac, but no one is compatable with them, so i dont think so.

                  any more suggestions?

Check out the dell refurb site, the X200 & C400's are nice and tiny.

I used to be in the "Why do I need a laptop" camp as well, that was until I bought mine. I now don't think I will ever build or buy a desktop again.

You know you're a car freak if you rationalize school supplies with engine tuning capabilities

                        Dude - WTF?

A Apple for a Computer Science Major? - Are you crazy - Get a dell, or what ever you can get for cheap. I'd go refurbished.

I think you're going to want an Intel chip....

Well, Mac OS X is based on FreeBSD/Darwin. Not an awful selection for CS.

I'm still a regular PC guy.

my family went through laptop hell this christmas. at first we bought HP pentium4, with pretty good specs but the battery wouldnt charge. so we sent the entire thing back(stupid) and asked for a higher model, but instead we got a much crappier HP with a celeron and half the ram as the old one. We actually did that twice but they kept sending us crappier machines (we were dealing with refurbished systems and the website wasnt up to date). So now were stuck with the celeron and it freezes after about 2-3hrs because HP says celerons run hotter than the P4's and there's nothing we can do. Also battery life on the celerons is considerably lower than the P4's. So...what i'm trying to get across is dont buy a celeron laptop! Though if your into building computers you may have already known that.

Im a big mac fan what can I say. Im a computer science major myself and I have two comps. One I built myself and runs 2000 pro and one of the original g3 apple Ibooks (got it right when the current design was introduced) that machine has neer crashed on my once. In over three years of daily use - not once. Say that for your windoze machine
