    E30 M40 to E36 M42

    Hi guys!
I just want to swap my M40 to M42. I want to take the engine from an E36 because E30 IS is rare here. I only know that I have to put the oil pan from the M40 to the M42 and that I will need the E30 IS engine mounting brackets. Transmission is the same. I need a little help in the wiring. If i know well the E30 has different pin layout (and maybe connectors?). So what should I do with the wiring harness? Do I need the E36 wiring or the E30 wiring can be modified to get all the things work?
    Thanks;)

FYI, the engine from the E36 318is, 318ti, and Z3 1.9 was the M44B19. When you're doing your search, it will help if you look for "M44."

Yes you're right, but if I know well the Coupé has the M42 Engine till 1994.

M44 is a pile of shit.

M44 came about for OBDII circa 1996.

          M42 was up until 1995.

M40 and M42 use the same ECU, so I don't think it will be that hard to convert the 2. If the E36 motor has the flat accesories belt, you may have a few small difficulties- I know the E30 front accesories will not fit in the e36, they rub on a frame piece.- just use the front of the M40 motor and that will be solved.

I would alsos just run the M40 wiring harness- should be totally doable with minimal changes to a couple connectors. maybe the M40 engine brackets will also work on the M42.

check www.e30zone.net, it has a lot more info about the m40 as well as the swap you mentioned
