    Experience of a lifetime

(this is long, but you may enjoy it)

Most of you know my dad builds high-performance engines for BMW's....and he always has his personal car which he tastefully modifies. He had an S14 powered 2002, then a supercharged 3.0L S50 318ti, and now an E30 M3 with a custom aluminum block S50. He has always been extremely anal about letting us kids drive any of his cars---and he has never let us. Ever.

On Sunday, after we finsihed up some stuff on my car, I mentioned to him that it is a nice day and would be perfect to take the M3 for a drive. He grinned and complied.

We set out towards some backroads. He was really laying into his M3; I've never been in the car with him during spirited driving such as this. 8/10ths + on this sweeping backroad. His smoothness amazed me. I was astonished. I now know that I cannot drive anywhere near his level.

So we start heading back home on the interstate, when he pulls over on the shoulder and gets out, and tells me to hop in!!!!!!!

He told me to keep the revs under 7500, and I agreed to go along. I rolled off in 1st, watching traffic. He said, "goose it." I immediately gave it WOT and experienced the most ungodly out-of-the-hole acceleration of my life. (His car has a 3.46 rear end with a 1:1 5th gear.....equivalent of a 4.27 in an E30). I hit 2nd gear and proceeded to redline through 3rd. It was astonishing.

Crusing on the highway at about 60, I left it in 4th and squeezed it....the engine just sang as the car pulled HARD.

He then told me to get off the highway, and get back on coming the opposite direction. As I was coming down the on-ramp, he told me to leave it in 2nd and go about 40mph to merge. The traffic flow was pretty heavy and at about 70mph. He glanced over to check traffic and then said.........(waiting, waiting)...."NOW!" With no delay, I stuck it as the E30 absolutely stormed out, swatted 3rd gear and got way ahead of traffic. :)

Getting off the highway, coming up on the top of the ramp fast, beginning to slow down...He said, "wait wait ok hit the brakes." The E36 M3 front brakes stopped the E30 in a heartbeat.

Shocked, and amazed....I casually drove it home. His mentioning that my car would have similar performance left me a little scared...though extremely happy. I had a ridiculous smile on my face for about the next 20 minutes.

I can't express in words the sound and feel of the car at WOT....it is just something that has to be experienced.

That made the last 18 years of my life.....just thought I'd share.

Here is a picture of the car:

Sounds awesome Stu. Your dad's ///M looks slick with those late-model wheels on it....something I haven't see before. I'm sure many of us wish we had a dad (or any close relative for that matter) in the BMW tuning biz. So many great opportunities for someone in your situation. Just do good in college and then come home and help dad run the shop ;)

I am so jealous of you Stu...

My dad drives an 87' MB turbo diesel station wagon. :(

Keep us updated on the project; I wanna see some donut videos with that all motor 3 liter.

Bill---faster than Alex's? Tough to say. Our main performance test is, 50-80mph in 3rd gear. My dad is getting low 4's, Alex claims his is a tick faster. But who knows.

rwh---you're not the first one to ask. :)

Jon---definately planning on running the business later in life.

What are yoru dads dyno figures,

                  I have a 3,73 in 5th it´s like a 5,2:1 on a 5th in a M20 whose 5th is a 0:0,81
                  :)

My goal is 350-360hp NA worked only,
I got a airplane pilot and also a buddy of mine to say that my car is as quick as a B10 Alpina running 1,7bar boost, 400hp and 600nm torque, I like such comments :)
Others say it´s the fastest car they have sat in,
well everybody except that guy who just sold his 600hp Trans,

I love stories like that, really makes it all more fun,
As I love blasting in my E30, at 85mph I am at 4500rpm in 5th, WOT there and I am off to the redline in a blast, almost hit a 320hp Porsche Targa when he was trying to leave me behind,

I know I have the wrong diff, but doing a 80-120kmh test wich is 50-75 I got mid 3´s
                  4th mid 4´s and 5th high 5´s

I´ll go out and check out a 80-130kmh test tomorrow

That is why I love BMW's as they are one of the few cars that can perform like that with being all stock(minus the S50 :D ). I took a friend of mine for a ride in my car over to a foreign dealership as thye had some e30's for sale and he wanted me to check them out for him. Well they were closed. So on the way I took my marry old time, and he kept saying man when are you going to punch it and what not. So I get on the highway and don't ever get into the throttle untill I'm about ready to merge onto interstate. Neadless to say as soon as I hit the entrance I punched it and got up to 110, note there was no one beside or infront of me and as soon as I got past the concrete barrier sepperating me from the rest of the traffic I droped the spead down to 80. So instantly he says Man did you knwo the speedo meater was all the way over there, as he points at my cluster. So all I say is so? He couldn't quite grasp it that an 88 BMW all completly stock with no engine mods could hit that speed so easily.
So Then I decided to take him on some twistys. The first road I pulled onto there was a large truck infront of me and he makes a coment about them going so slow. I tell him who cares there doing the speed limit at least. He then asked me what speed I do normally on this road and I tell him 40-50. And he chirps in saying there is no way I can do 50 on this road. Well the next wide sweaping curve I took at 60, I did scare him a little when I dropped into second right at the apex of a corner and Punched the throttle. The rear end didn't brake loose but you could feel the tires start to slip a little.
I just love the way A BMW can either just cruise around town with no complaints or be tossed at corners like a true champ.
Nice story Stu, It's great to hear about some good father and son bonding!

Mind giving a rundown of your dad's car and mods?

I know it's the M52 Al engine...but what about pistons, head, springs, valves, etc...

Awesome Stu. My dad lets me drive his Tahoe all the time, but I don't get out of it grinning. Maybe when he gets his E46 M3...until then it's my uncle's 355 :D

Got any more pics of his car? Your dad is a legend.
